David this was so helpful, thank you. Interestingly the "Use in ArcGIS Collector" wasnt there when I first created the map but showed up later. I'm very glad you posted this tip.

I have two versions (old and revised) of an arc map created in PRO in my companies arc online space. I used the old 'editabe' version to create the new map thinking it would automatically retain the editable nature, but when I was in the field I discovered that was not the case. I can't remember how to make the map editable...i can make the layers editable, but the maps details still shows 'read-only'.

Have you unchecked "Use in ArcGIS Collector" in the web map settings? See my post from today. Just discovered this bug. https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-field-maps-questions/bug-found-don-t-uncheck-quot-use-in-arcgis-collector-quot/m-p/1053103#M907

We have also found that if you make the feature layer editable after the web map is created, it will show as read only. We went back in and resaved the web map and this resolved the issue

Thank you for this! That is exactly what I did - added layers to a map, then went back and made the layers editable after saving the map. I was very frustrated that Field Maps Designer will tell me that the map is read-only but not let me instruct it to be editable (at least not as far as I could find).

If anyone else ends up here from Google, I tried saving the map again, which didn't work initially. Next I tried to save-as to a new map, which was also read-only. Then I went back to the original, tried flipping offline access on and off a bunch of times, and that didn't work either. Eventually I disabled editing for a few individual layers in the map and then re-saved, and suddenly it was editable. I'm not sure if changing layer editability was necessary or if making any change to the map would make the re-save take, but if re-save alone doesn't work for you, making other changes to the map before re-saving may help.
