Ha! A feature or a bug!? Ok, this makes sense and we will change the MaxScale in the web map. I do wonder if the cache scale of the imagery service matters too. We are also planning to re-cache our imagery to include higher zoom levels. It seems the combination of these two solutions will definitely work for us. Thanks for the info on this @ChrisS1 . I'll report back after we put these 2 fixes in place to confirm that it worked, or not.

Our imagery basemap 'disappears' when zooming in past level 21 but we would like it to overzoom such that the imagery pixelates but doesn't go away. @ColinLawrence you mentioned in this post that "Collector and Field Maps do use basemap overzoom where you can zoom in past the available scale level so the room and smaller scales are not always necessary;". We are seeing this overzoom behavior with the same imagery basemap in Collector but in Field Maps the imagery simply goes away. Is there a setting in the app or webmap that we can set to enable the overzoom? Or something else we can do?

Big Thanks for any insights

I've seen this happen with some of our basemaps. The visibility range for a basemap usually corresponds to the range for which tiles are cached. By opening up the basemap in your web map, you can make sure that the visibility range on the basemap service goes all the way to the closest zoom.

I want to follow up on this. Our base maps via Field Maps use to zoom PAST the cached layers defined scales up until a few weeks ago. I'm thinking some sort of update changed something. I opened up the exact same map in Collector and we can still zoom in past the extent of defined scales. This is new to Field Maps!

How do I get this back? If this setting was removed from Field Maps then I think it needs to come back. We are using a GPS with field maps and sometimes we need to zoom far in to see points that they GPS that are within 5 feet of each other. Having the aerial basemap disappear on them is making it difficult for them to do their job.

I can confirm that the most recent update for Field Maps took away the overzoom capability. I was able to zoom past the largest basemap scale without it disappearing this morning. I then updated the Field Maps app in iOS and the basemap now disappears when zooming in past the largest scale (the overzoom still works in Collector. This is a crucial capability that we need for our field editing workflow.

HI @David ,

The ability to zoom in beyond the maximum visible scale of a basemap and have the basemap still visible was actually a bug (albeit a useful one for many people). Field Maps now honors the MaxScale setting in the json for the webmap so the basemap will disappear when you zoom in beyond that scale. The current easiest way to get around this and keep the basemap showing when you zoom in is to use https://ago-assistant.esri.com to change the MaxScale for the basemap to 0. This will keep the basemap visible no matter how far you zoom in.

I hope that helps.

Chris

This works great until the user changes the basemap, Then the changes made in the web map JSON revert to whatever the new basemap was that the user selected. Can the MaxScale be changed directly in the basemap map service JSON so any (of our internal) basemaps also draw at larger scales when the user selects different ones in the app?

An update:

Setting the maxScale to 0 in the web map basemap in ArcGIS Online Assistant did not resolve the issue for us. There was no maxScale property in the basemap layer json at all but we added it with no result.

We resolved it by setting the Resampling max scale property to 0 of the imagery service in ArcGIS Server Manager. Perhaps this is because we are using our own imagery, not sure, but this worked for us.

This new feature should be considered a bug and reworked. Perhaps a setting and/or option to resample the basemap beyond the maxScale defined by the cached basemap and/or web map. What else is odd is that we're using a custom basemap with tiles down to 1:71, but the maxScale always resets to 1:282 after a save, even though we've configured the web map to show all the way to 1:71.

Agree with the frustration this change is causing. I am currently working with Esri support because the documented workarounds in the knowledge base article don't address sideloaded basemaps. The workaround is extremely awkward. I couldn't find any way to do it on an iOS device; I had to redeploy the entire tpk after making the change on a windows device (which is hours of file transfer) but the following does work:

1. Change the .tpk extension to .zip and unzip

2. Go to servicedescriptions >> mapserver >> mapserver.json

3. Search for maxscale in Notepad ++ or something

4. Find the one that is not = 0 and change it to 0.

5. Rezip using compression = 0 (store)

6. Rename the file extension

7. Redeploy tpk to device

Note that tthe Esri analyst I'm working with says there is currently no way in Pro to adjust this maxscale when you build the tpks or tpkxs - you will have to produce the package and then hack the file before deploying to the device.
