Field Maps Screen Rotation/Orienatation

I would like to see the Field Maps app for Android include the ability to rotate the screen, i.e. having the mobile device in a landscape orientation would see the app re-orientate to suit and when the device is moved back to portrait the app return to a portrait orientation. This would help for all of our field workers that use this for navigation when the tablet is mounted in their vehicles.

What type of device are you using? Field Maps does support app rotation with full size tablets.

The Tab Active line (or at least the 8" versions) do not support landscape view in Field Maps (or Collector/Explorer) due to the restricted size. I am not sure if that will always be the case but for now that is expected.

Trimbles New TSC5 controller is a landscape device with android 10. it would be an ideal tool for Field Maps.

Yes I vote for the TSC5 from Trimble as well, as it is great with a android unit with keypad when doing surveys.

Agree with the posters above. It would be nice to see Field Apps work with any Android or IOS app in landscape or portrait mode.

@MatthewGeorge Update: We should support rotation on the Tab Active 2 device at our next Android release (21.4). The cutoff for rotation is at 601 dpi (which is not typically readily available on device product pages) or roughly screens around 7".

The issue is still not fixed, there is NO option in field maps to rotate the screen. Autorotation only works for a specific set of Android devices, if the device is not in the Esri supported list, it will automatically display in portrait mode.

In our organisation we use 10" android tablets, where the display is always in portrait mode and we have no option to set it in landscape.

Please add an option where the user can rotate the display.

We use apple iPad Pros and the ability for the screen orientation to change with the direction that the GPS is traveling would be a wonderful added benefit that would greatly improve our data collection.

We produce a 7" Android tablet (Mesa 3) and continue to get many inquiries from customers when Field Maps will support landscape orientation. The device is Android 11 and has a display resolution WXGA 1280 x 800.

Support for the tablet orientation on smaller form factor tablets had to be pulled since my last comment due to unforeseen consequences. It is still in the roadmap for a future release of Field Maps.

I would like to upvote this idea. One of our field techs is using a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite and likes to use it in landscape mode. They previously had an iPad which could do landscape mode and is dissatisfied that Android can't do it.

This would be very helpful! Later versions of Samsung Active Tab need to be in landscape orientation for users wearing polarized sunglasses.

One of the critical ways my organization uses Field Maps is to collect fish and river bed data. Polarized sunglasses are needed for underwater visibility, but then need to be removed in order to see the Field Maps screen. This back and forth happens while users are bracing themselves against the flow of the river. Landscape mode would make this quicker, easier, and safer!

Works well only on iOS. Samsung Tab Active4 also works now. But no support for many other Android tabs.

I'm trying the Mesa 3 Android now and see that Field Maps is still not able to do landscape mode on it. Is this back on the roadmap yet?

@IngridHogle It is on the roadmap but still a couple of releases out. I am not sure about the Mesa 3 as that is a bit smaller even than the Tab Active devices that are fairly commonly used among Field Maps users. It appears the mesa 3 has a 7" screen.

Anyway that ESRI will support landscape regardless of the device. Tablets are great, but my government cell phone is much more convenient. I use a chest nav board when on fires or other wildlife surveys, and it would be great to have it in landscape, even understanding there will be some limitations given the size. I think it should be up to the user to decide.

Trimble TSC5 was mentioned in this thread few years ago. It definetly has an orientation issue and I have no solution for that. However new Trimble TSC710 does the thing as attached image shows.

Trimble TSC710 and Field Maps

The story here is that problematic TSC5 has a 5" screen while new (autumn 2025 release) TSC710 has a 7" screen and in this bigger one Field Maps works in landscape mode. Both devices are with Android OS. I heard a while ago that it works as I thought but today was first time I see it in my own eyes.

So one answer to TSC5 problem is that upgrade it to new field collecting computer TSC710. It is not very cheap fix but it is still an one possible solution.
