Hi,
A shapefile is a spatial data format from Esri which can be created in many of their products. It is used to represent geographical entities - airports, roads, land areas etc. The Shapefile specification has been published so products from other vendors can also write out this format (a Google search reveals several options, including free GIS).
Mike

I was simply wondering how one might build a shape file, do you need a program/what is it? Or is it something else.
