Legend on map when printing

Hi,

I have not used the printing button in the ArcGIS Explorer Online until recently. When I clicked on the button, a printing preview came up on screen. I see a map but no legend. It does not make sense to print a map without legend when there are many layers on it. Is there a way to put the legend on the map when printing?

I appreciate your response on this.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to print a legend in an ArcGIS Explorer Map, whether using ArcGIS Explorer for the desktop or ArcGIS Explorer Online.

Check out the Print a Map help topic which discusses which items will print via ArcGIS Explorer Online.

Here is a blog which discusses a workaround for adding a legend to printed maps with ArcGIS Explorer Desktop.

I haven't tried it, but perhaps you can save your ArcGIS Explorer Online map, open it through the Add Data dialog in Explorer for the desktop, and then use the workaround from the blog above?

Haven't tried it, but it's worth a shot.

I'm sorry to rain on your parade but ESRI's attitudes towards the importance of map legends really leaves something to be desired.

For instance, in using ArcView 9.3.1 I have found that I have to go to a 3rd party extension in order to control the contents of the legend and limit the legend to those items that actually appear in the layout. This extension has been around for 10 years and still has not be incorporated as core functionality.

Now I find that the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop doesn't even print a legend. This was a tool for which I had high hopes. I was going to use it as a support tool for my front desk staff. Now, I'm not sure this is a good idea. If a customer can't even get a printout of a map with a legend then the tool is not optimal.

Remember the basics and always, always, do them well.

hi all
this is a bit old discussion but I am posting, as the topic is still open
I have solved the issue by creating my own map composing tool and generating the legend there itself. provision of north arrow, title, sub title is also there , and prints the map in pdf. it serves my map printing requirement.
