Point symbols dont' display correctly

I've run into a problem where point symbols are not displayed correctly. I have a point shapefile that I've added to an ArcGIS Explorer project. I have been trying to symbolize it using the symbols that come with ArcGIS Explorer 1200. Instead of seeing the symbol, I'm seeing a grid of small, colored points where each of the features are. Here's a screen capture (click for a bigger version):

I've tried clearing the cache, restarting the application, restarting the computer, adding the symbol I want to use manually -- always the same problem.

Ryan,

A few questions:

what happens if you increase the symbol size?
Are you in 3D or 2D display mode?
Do the symbols display differently in the other display mode (2D or 3D depending on above)?
How many points are in the Shapefile?
Do the symbols display OK if you zoom in?

Hi,
I'm seeing the same problem. For me, the symbols display ok in 2D, but in 3D I see the same rasterized symbols as Ryan.

Point Style: Draped works, Billboard shows the problem
Increasing and Decreasing point size doesn't make a difference
Zooming doesn't make a difference
I got 470 Points in my shp file.

One more thing I've noticed is, that I see the same wrong drawing behaviour in ArcGlobe, but only when displaying the points as 3D Billboards or any 2D Style. The other 3D Styles appear right.

Kathrin,

When you say you see the same behaviour in ArcGlobe - is that version 10.0?

It's possible this could be related to graphics card drivers - many 3D-related issues that have been reported have been resolved by upgrading the graphics drivers on the PC. You could also run the system requirements checker here: http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/1186/10895 just to confirm all the required 3D capabilities are sufficiently covered.
