Okay I created a layer package and I have shapefiles and I have Rasters. I am using Explorer 1200. And when I add the shapefiles and the layer package together Explorer crashes. I have made the rasters and the layer package into a basemap and then added the shapefiles and it still crashes. What do I need to do?????? The layer package is to show my labels and my shapefiles to be able to see the data.

Hi Kathy,

Sorry to hear that you have been having problems with ArcGIS Explorer. The obvious answer is that Explorer should not crash using this combination. Here's a few suggestions of possible ways forward:

Post your data here so we can test it.

Does the crash happen in both 2D and 3D displays? Have you tried different data combinations to see which combination produces the crash? With or without labels?

Is the layer package, label, data source the same as your shapefile data source

If you can't post the data you could try to reproduce the issue using exactly the same data formats using test data then post that here.

If you are an Esri customer you could open a support ticket for the issue - they will also ask you for a reproducer

There's been a lot of work done of layer packages for the 1500 release, so you could try again using that when it's released in the next couple of weeks

Regards
Mike Rudden
ESRI

I am having this problem as well. ArcExplorer (1500) crashes when data is added or sometimes when zooming about the map. I am using 12 layer packages linking to vector data on SDE.

Was there a solution found for the original question?

I was encountering this same issue and I believe, by trial & error, I have isolated the cause. It seems to occur when the layer package includes feature classes that have specific 'Scale Ranges' set (on the 'General' tab in 'Layer Properties').

Use the "Show layer at all scales" option on all of your layers, then re-build the layer package and try it in ArcGIS Explorer. Post here whether that solved the problem or not.

It doesn't entirely make sense, since ArcGIS Explorer appears to/should support this functionality, but I wonder if there is an issue in the layer package creation that corrupts it.

Thanks,

Matt Goodman - GIS Supervisor
GeoComm Inc.
601 W.
