ArcGIS Explorer will not display Raster with Worldfile?

ArcGIS Explorer is not recognizing the world file for displaying raster images for GeoJPG, or GeoTIFF. I can download these raster datasets and view in ArcMap, but want to be able to open in ArcGIS Explorer. Anyone know how to fix that?

A few things to look at?

- Check the coordinate system of your raster in ArcCatalog: does it have one defined? If so, and it's not one of the core coord systems you might need to download the Projection Engine Expansion Pack for ArcGIS Explorer: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200/index.cfm?fa=download

- If the above doesn't work you may need to create a Layer File of your raster in ArcMap and add that to Explorer.

- If that doesnt work try creating a Layer Package of your raster in ArcMap and adding that to Explorer.

If none of the above helps and if you are able to attach a sample of the raster you are using I will take a look here.

GeoTiff Raster Won't Display in ArcGIS Explorer

I too am having problems with viewing a GeoTiff in ArcGIS Explorer. I downloaded a set of Tif files off the UK Ordnance Survey site (250000 Raster data set - free) along with their georeference files which come with the data set (.tfw & .tab files). The tiff files on their own don't appear to load as they are not georeferenced so not having easy access to ArcGIS Desktop or ArcMap etc I neede another way of georeferencing the tif's thereby turning them into GeoTiffs. I used the gdal_translate open source tool to do that with the following command line call.

gdal_translate.exe -of GTiff -co PROFILE=GeoTIFF -co INTERLEAVE=PIXEL -co COMPRESS=LZW -co TILED=YES -a_srs EPSG:4326 source.tif output.tif

ArcGIS Explorer now doesn't complain when it loads the raster images, but nothing appears and no attempt to 'GoTo' a layer shows any images. Sort of stuck with what to do next. I can display the generated geotiff files fine in the open source Quantum GIS tool.

I haven't attached a sample of the before and after tifs due to copyright fears but the images are freely available from the UK OS site. I've also used the British National Grid coordinated system in generating the geotiffs in the gdal_translate command (i.e. EPSG:27700) and that didn't seem to make any difference.

Any help appreciated.

Here is a link to download aerial photo data for Montana, MrSID format with a world file. displays fine in ArcMap, but not in ArcGIS Explorer. Should be able to use this directly as a raster file in Explorer.

Aerial photos are in Montana State Plane Nad83, I have explorer in the same datum.

I have the same problem as smiffs4u in that when I try to load OS Miniscale into ArcGIS Explorer I get the "Failed to load raster....Unknown Coordinate System" error. Can anyone suggest a workflow for loading Miniscale into ArcGIS Explorer?

I downloaded Montana tile 3440.sid file, set my ArcGIS Explorer 2D coordinate system to NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Montana_FIPS_2500, added the 3440.sid raster to AGX and it fell perfectly into place on the map. It also falls into place correctly when my AGX map coordinate system is set to WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere.

I found a solution that worked for me - I opened the tif in ArcMap, created the pyramids and defined the British National Grid projection. Would have been nice to be able to do this in ArcExplorer.

Defining projections for datasets is unlikely to be functionality we would add because ArcGIS Explorer is primarily designed to be an application for consuming content authored / published by GIS users, where you would expect elements like the spatial reference to be defined. However, raster datasets (in contrast to vector data) often get shipped around without any spatial reference information so there could be a case for this. If you would like to see this functionality added please put forward the idea at http://ideas.arcgis.com/

I can confirm that this SID image (2045.sdw), with the SDW world file (2045.sdw), works fine in the next release of ArcGIS Explorer without any need for modifying the data in ArcGIS Desktop.

We do not expect the 1500 release to have any issues with ArcGIS Desktop. Unfortunately a few users have reported problems with 1200 and ArcGIS Desktop despite extensive testing of the products in a variety of combinations in multiple environments prior to release.

I too am unable to get a sid file in explorer. I just downloaded the latest build and it still doesn't work.

Any clues?

I figured it out by saving it as a layer file.
