The latest ArcGIS Explorer says it can export layers as KML files. How? I only seem to be able to save as LPK.

ArcGIS Explorer 1500 can share ArcGIS Explorer notes and image overlays as KML.

I have no idea what sort of format my information is in. I imported a CSV of locations. I should be able to export those as a KML. When I click on share, all I get is Map Content and Layer Package.

If you import csv file, then you have collection of notes. Right click on a folder->Share...->KML

Make sure you have ArcGIS Explorer 1500 installed on your computer.

oh, I am mistaken. I'm using a shp file. I exported a CSV from ArcExplorer, had some funky results, so trying shp to KML in ArcGIS Explorer. I do have 1500, assuming 2.0.0.1500 means that.

Mike, you cannot export shapefile to KML.

That's dumb. If the program can export one thing to KML, it should be able to export everything to KML.

Can I export it as a CSV like ArcExplorer can, then import to ArcGIS Explorer, and export as KML? 😛

Just so I understand the workflow you're trying to achieve:

1. What is the initial format of the data you have? (Shapefile? CSV?)

2. What do you ultimately want to do with the data? (use it in ArcGIS Explorer? Export for use in another application?

I have data provided from the FCC. http://wireless.fcc.gov/geographic/index.htm

The microwave data I'm after comes in dbf, prj, shp, and shx files. I want to issue a query against the data (identify all Clearwire license locations in Illinois). I want to export it to KML for easy consumption in Google Earth or Google Maps.

Mike,

I downloaded the microwave dataset (http://wireless.fcc.gov/geographic/data/db/microwave.zip). That's a lot of points all in one unsymbolised, unfiltered dataset.

My suggestion would be to look at using the new query functionality in ArcGIS Explorer to subset the data in some way, and perhaps produce a series of layers in Explorer which represent those various subsets (http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1500//en/query_editor.htm). They can be grouped into a folder in Explorer. This can then easily be shared as "Map Content" or a Layer Package, either directly as a file or via ArcGIS.com. The whole system has become a really elegant way to share information now.

If you really want to just share KML then you can search the web for Shapefile to KML converters - there are several available. You may even find there are some with an API... which you could call from an ArcGIS Explorer Add-in. That way you might find you could do some preprocessing/symbolisation of the Shapefile prior to exporting it.

Is there a way to export a Note to KML using code from an Add-In? I want to be able to do the same thing I can do manually by "sharing" by note and creating a KML (really a KMZ file), but I want to do it using C# code in my custom Add-In. Is that possible? I do not see anything in the SDK that looks like what I want to do. Is something like this in the API anywhere?
