Obtaining Symbology from Package Layer/Package Child Layer

Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain the symbology of a package layer/package child layer and apply it to a newly created layer?

I am attempting to do this via the SDK but I have only discovered feature layers have been able to thus far.
I understand that the package child layers do store a shapefile version on the local machine but have been unable to figure out how to access that or even apply symbology from the package child layer (given that the shapefile won't store symbologys).

I understand that when using the Query Builder it does retain the original symbology from the queried layer. Can this be functionality be used in the SDK?

I am also using vb.net
