Invalid field name length in dbf?

I am having a problem adding several shapefiles in Explorer due to an apparent issue with their dbf files. Here is the error message I received for one of the files I tried to load:

com.esri.mo.file.shp.InvalidFieldNameException: The field name () has an invalid length in (M:\GPS_Projects\FranklinCarmichael\Export\SHP_exports\0517-0604_combined3_QC\Park.dbf)

I have checked all field names in the problem dbf files and all satisfy the 10 character max limitation for the shapefile format. Is there something else I should be looking for?

Hi,

The exception you are gettting does indeed imply that there is an invalid field. Unfortunately there is not enough information here to diagnose the problem or to establish whether it is a bug. If possible, please can you post the dbf file and I'd be happy to give it a try for you.

i encountered same problem.. could you try my shp and dbf file.
unable to view using ArcExplorer then I check the log.

i think the log is insufficient.

ArcExplorer (TM) - Java Edition
Version 9.3.1
Build 2095.1230

I was able to view by changing my fieldname

fieldname: Log Index -> LogIndex

space in fieldname is a limitation?

Then, I also tried to change my fieldname to non-english. It displays garbage..

e.g. English -> Japanese

fieldname: LogIndex -> �?��?��?��?��??�??�?��?�

ArcExplorer has been superseded by ArcGIS Explorer. I recommend you to try it out. It is a free GIS viewer.
