The new build, 2500, seems to not want to show any basemaps in the basemap gallery. I am aware of the previous bug and thread, and have tried deleting the cache both manually and through the "Explorer Options" menu, but still cannot get the basemaps to show. I uninstalled and reinstalled the new build as well. I did have AGX build 1750 prior to this, but made sure to uninstall everything. I even went into the basemaps folder in the default install location, and was able to open individual .nmf maps containing the different basemaps (except for Bing - I guess these are now "purchase" only basemaps). In addition, the new "Layers" button only shows a blank palette when clicked, with "Loading" being shown, but seems to never load. Not even sure what is supposed to appear with this layers button. Any advice? Thanks -Eric

As far as I can tell, I have access to all parts of ArcGIS Online. I can pull up the basemaps directly in AGO, I can download the .nmf's and view them individually (meaning the basemap will be displayed in the contents and the data frame, but still nothing in the basemaps dropdown). From a firewall/proxy standpoint, there is nothing that seems to be blocking this connectivity. As I stated earlier, I can also individually add to the basemaps dropdown each basemap from the "basemaps/server" folder in the default install, or individually open them, and see all basemaps except bing. I do not want to do this for each and every one of our users though, they will not be named properly, bing still doesn't work with this method, etc.

Mark - Thank you for all the detailed help. Seems as though it was a simple fix once I started digging around. It was just the "Enable ArcGIS Connection" setting on the service that starts simultaneously with AGX 2500. See post here --> http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/77719-AGX-2500-Install-Observations?p=273225&viewfull=1#post273225

I know there is no official technical support for public users of ArcGIS Explorer Build 2500, but can someone pllleeeasssssseeeeee help me with this problem? I'm begging; I'm desperate!
I've tried everything and I can't get the basemaps to load. I am supposed to give a presentation to class on ArcGIS Explorer and I can't get it to work on my Dell Latitude laptop with Windows 7, though it works perfectly fine on my desktop computer. I am able to load it on my laptop, it is connected to the server, all the functions/buttons appear to work, but I can't see the basemaps. All I see is a black window for the basemap display. I passed the systems requirement test and I have all the necessary technical requirements, so I don't know why it won't work. If anyone can spare even the smallest grain of advice or support, I would be forever grateful.

Thank you,
Celia

~All I see is a black window for the basemap display...~
Thank you,
Celia

If it is a black display in 2D, the graphics card driver should be checked, and updated if possible.

The first thing to do is find out what graphics card you have. the system check
http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri_if/1186/10895
will report the graphics card. The next thing to try is finding a driver for the graphics card that may resolve the problem. Often this just means getting the newest driver for the card.

From the change appearance of your display dialog click "Advanced Settings" and take a look at the properties for you graphics card.

Once you have determined what graphics card you have and driver, look at the computer makers website (HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc..) to see if there is a new driver for the computer / card available from them. You can also try getting a driver directly from the graphics card makers web site (NVidia, ATI, Intel etc..).

If you install a driver that makes things worse, don't panic, you can always start your computer in safe mode, go to the same dialog pictured above and roll back the driver. New drivers do not always solve the issue, but they often do. If you do find a driver that works, please share the information.

Thanks,
Mark

Dear Mark,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. I appreciate the time and effort you put into troubleshooting my problem. After determining that there was nothing wrong with my graphic card or driver, I brought my laptop to a computer repair shop and the problem was actually with Windows. They had to re-install Windows and now ArcGIS Explorer is displaying the basemaps. What a pain! But at least the problem is solved and I can go forward with my ArcGIS Explorer presentation.
Thanks again for your kind reply.

Best wishes,
Celia

I had to go in and look for the old E3 folder on my machine, then manually add in the basemaps that were there. Of course they now are labeled basemap0, 2,3... instead of the origional labels. They default location that it was looking at was a new folder in my documents folder even though it was downloading the nmf files in the correct place. I also had to add a new gis server (services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services) since the default one wasn't installing. So far this is working, we'll see if the nmf files get updated or not.

The reason why the basemaps wouldn't load for me had to do with my version of Windows. I have an older laptop (2008) with only 2GB of RAM with Windows 7 64-bit installed. Apparently, ArcGIS Explorer was taking up too much memory on my 2GB system (or something like that... can't remember what the computer guy said exactly) so the solution was to install Windows 7 32-bit instead and that fixed the issue, as ArcGIS Explorer is a 32-bit program. Needless to say, it is a huge pain to re-install a different version of Windows, but now I can see the basemaps.

Macs are looking better and better every day!

Celia

After talking to ESRI tech support, it seems as though there was an update to the ArcGIS Online service this past Thursday (3/21), leading to some type of universal error in which the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500 builds all showed no basemaps (including the folks at ESRI). Haven't heard of a solution/fix yet though ...

I contacted ESRI support today 3/25 and she gave me these steps to add basemaps to my AGX build 2500 for what appeared to be an empty basemap gallery. But no resolution beyond this one-by-one type of workthrough.

1) Navigate to Base Map dropdown.
2) Click on Manage My Base maps.
3) Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Explorer\basemaps\Server and select the base map that you want to add.
4) Click on add Base map button which will show you the thumbnails of the map.
5) Click on close and then you can add the base maps from My Base map options.
6) You will find the base maps added by you in Base Map dropdown.
7) If you want to rename the maps then navigate to the same server folder through the windows explorer and then rename it.

As of March 21st the update to ArcGIS online did make a change that ArcGIS Explorer was not programmed to cope with.

When you are signed into ArcGIS online or an ArcGIS online organization ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will correctly use the defaultmap, basemaps and layer gallery items specified by the organization or from the "ArcGIS Explorer Desktop basemap and layers group".

When you are not signed in to ArcGIS online (which is the default), the online system (api) directs ArcGIS Explorer to a group, that does not contain ArcGIS Explorer content. This is a change from the previous version of ArcGIS online where the basemap group was only provided by ArcGIS online if you were signed in. I am currently working with the team to remedy this issue as soon as possible.

So another immediate work-around for this issue, is to get an ArcGIS online account,(https://www.arcgis.com/home/signin.html?) and from the ArcGIS Explorer file menu, sign in.

Mark

Mark,
I'm not sure we're on the same page. I do have an ArcGIS Online account (the personal/free/whatever it is called now) and am signed in via ArcGIS Explorer online. I do not see a basemap gallery, unless I add them in manually from the install directory.

I do not have a fee-based ArcGIS Online for Organizations account. Are you stating that I need the fee-based $2500 minimum AGO for Org account in order for your recommendation to work in AGX?

*edit - I also don't see the ArcGIS Online option under the Add Content dropdown - even when signed in to AGO. Another difference from Build 1750.

Thanks!
