Build raster attribute table

Hi,

I downloaded raster datasets from the EOS satellite TERRA, namely MOD17A2 8day-period data as hdf files. On opening the file with ArcGIS 9.3, there was no attribute table available.
When trying to build the raster attribute table in Arc Toolbox I get the following error:

"000049 : Failed to build attribute table
The raster attribute table cannot be built on the input raster dataset.
Solution
Check the input raster dataset to make sure that it is a single-band integer dataset;other types of raster datasets do not support raster attribute tables."

I already checked that the data set was single band and signed integer pixel type and this was indeed the case. On support.esri.com, I couldn't find other conditions that might be necessary so that the attribute table could be build. Is there anything else I missing which could cause this error in building the raster attribute table?

I just figured out a way around it. When exporting the data to a new layer, the attribute table does become visible.
