topic How can you select objects? in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop Questions

In AGX Online there's a button that allows you to select multiple objects and report on them. For example, select multiple lines by drawing a box, and then use the Dashboard summary gadget to summarize and display the contents in a field of the selected objects - in my case the total length of all lines selected. It works great.

I'd like to replicate this functionality in AGX Desktop, however I see no method of selecting features. Am I missing something, or is this just not available? If not, will it be in the future? Seems like a fairly basic function - at least the ability to select multiple objects.

I've tried modeling a tool and publishing as a service, but it will not work in AGX because the tools require the user to either select a layer (entire feature set), or have a selection set of objects already selected before running the tool - and I can't figure out how to select objects in AGX.

Help?
