Upgrading from 10.8.1 to 11.1 is absolutely supported - "If these workflows do not impact your organization, you can upgrade directly from ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7.1 or later to 11.1."

https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/get-started/latest/windows/considerations-for-upgrades-to-11-0-and-later.htm

Whilst running the post-installer for ArcGIS Server 11.1 - each service which is still using the ArcMap runtime will be upgraded (or attempted). A very useful report of the upgraded services is available post-upgrade. Read more here - https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/publish-services/windows/check-services-with-arcmapservicecheck.htm

Some configurations are lost/not-supported between versions e.g. If you have WebGISDR setup on a schedule, I would recommend reviewing the properties file to incorporate any changes required.

Most configurations are maintained as mentioned by Chris. Once you've completed your upgrade, I'd recommend running the portalScan / serverScan python utilities to ensure your deployment is following best practices.

https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/portal/latest/administer/windows/scan-your-portal-for-security-best-practices.htm

We are planning to soon upgrade from ArcGIS Enterprie 10.8.1 to 11.1. This will be our first ArcGIS Enterprise upgrade to complete since initial installation.

My question is with upgrading ArcGIS Enterprise, will we be required to configure the software applications again (i.e., add the Certificate, configuring the identity store, etc.), or shall the upgrade recognize and keep these settings?

Thank you Chris. Yes, I am familiar with the changes to the ArcGIS Enterprise 11 developments. We are good, as far as that goes, as we haven't developed much in Enterprise at this point, but mostly published map services (via ArcGIS Pro only).

I'm in the same boat, going from 10.8.1 to 11.1 Also my first upgrade. I've taken care of the runtime switch, but I have a question related to the required disk space portion of the upgrade documentation

From step 3 of https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/how-to-upgrade-to-arcgis-enterprise-11-x-000029452

"Check the system requirements for the machine(s) that hosts the ArcGIS Enterprise products and ensure it meets the minimum requirements. From this, a list of the recommendations can be made like increasing the CPU, disk space, etc., before starting the upgrade process. See: ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 system requirements

Keep in mind that the amount of free space available on disk should be at least 2.5 times the amount of space in the directories. If not, allocate at least 2.5 times more space on disk. The upgrade must have this free space to successfully back up and upgrade your portal's content, site information, and security settings. "

If I read that correctly, the actual disk drive containing a directories folder has to have 2.5 times the filled space in the directories folder itself? So as an example, I have my ArcGIS Server directories on our D drive. There is 43 GB of files in the directories folder. That would mean that my D drive has to have 107 GB of free space?

As always, lots of snapshots with the ArcGIS services stopped.

Yes VM snapshots, specifically whilst the ArcGIS Services are stopped (to prevent lock file corruption etc in the event of a restore).

Running WebGISDR on-top of this is a bonus (the more backups the better), but will require extra work if you're solely relying on the WebGISDr backup (manually backing up cached services etc).

This is what's included in a WebGISDR:

ArcGIS Enterprise backups—Portal for ArcGIS | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise
