Is there anyway to configure a feature service to not be visible when added to ArcMap?

I know that you can make newly added layers visible/invisible in ArcMap under options > General > "make newly added layers visible by default" check box, but i am looking to do this server side.

As a note, in the published mxd there is a limited number of layers turned on and as expected the Map service respects this visibility.

thanks for the help folks.

this has been replicated by support and is bug #NIM102559 "The default visibility is always true for all layers of a feature service when consumed in ArcMap via SOAP."
