I'm not sure if this is the best forum or if the Geodatabase & SDE forum is best but since its an installation/setup issue, I thought I'd post this here. I'm going through the Install guide installing sde and come to the Editing service files on Windows step . I'm able to get rid of the comment code mentioned in Step 2 but I don't understand what Step 3 means.

3-Open the Windows services file.
4-Copy the service entry you defined in the services.sde file and paste it into the Windows service file.
5-Save and close both services files.

Where is the Windows services file?

This is my first time installing sde so I'm not exactly sure on the exact set up I need.

If you are setting up an ArcSDE application server, you must do it manually after you have created your geodatabase.

You must alter both the ArcSDE services file and the Windows services file to include an entry for the ArcSDE service port number. Where the Windows services file resides depends on your version of Windows. On Windows Server 2008, it is in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
