Indicator show a reference value one date past the current value?

I am working on metrics dashboards for my organization, and I found out how to show the most recently reported metric for the current value.

Is there a way to do something similar with the reference value? I want to show the previous month's metric, and I am not sure what is the best way to go about it. Options that come to mind are:

Create a data expression to get the value. I am concerned about the performance since we have many metrics which would result in many data expressions.
Create a new field and store the previous metric in that new field. It seems redundant but I would think this would have better performance.
