ArcGIS Collector won't show location or accuracy after 10.4.0 update

I updated ArcGIS Collector to 10.4.0 and now that brings with it new configuration for using a receiver. My problem now is that Collector can't fix in on my location nor give me a accuracy in ft with my Garmin GLO device. When I go to turn on my location within the map the device can't find my location. I suspect it has to do with the location profile settings, but I can't seem to figure that out. My offline map is in WGS_1984_Web_Mercator _Auxillary_Sphere. The default system is GCS WGS 1984, is there a necessary profile for the garmin glo to function?

Anyone else having this issue?

I am also having a similar issue trying to use a Trimble R1 GNSS. With the 10.4 update, it seems that you can choose (this might have been there on earlier versions too can't recall) but choose between the Provider as a either internal receiver or another device. In my case i wanted it to use the Trimble. When switching the profile to that the GPS locate won't function. I know the unit is correctly configured and hooked via bluetooth. Your not alone. I could go into more details when back into the office.

I submitted a case to ESRI and I got on the phone with tech support and he said that at least for my situation... The Integrated Receiver was the right selection for use with my Garmin GLO. He said since the integrated receiver on the Ipad Pro uses the the signal from the GLO it doesn't need to be selected within the collector app as a location provider. I tested this and it worked if I just used the default settings. It didn't work if I selected the garmin glo as a the receiver within the collector app. They sent me these urls. I hope this helps you the second one lists the gps receivers that they support that can be used directly with the app.

I am using a Trimble R1 also. I would say there is a bug in the communication between the receiver and collector. I to cannot get GPS to function when choosing the Trimble Receiver. The only way I can get GPS to function is use the integrated receiver. Then in the accuracy down at the bottom of collector the lowest I could get the read out to display was 16.4 ft, while GNSS status read 13 in. and my actual repeated shot locations are 6" to a 1' horizontal residual on a known control monument.

Hi Mark,

I also just started using a Trimble R1 with collector.

It is using the locations from the R1 just fine, usually 15inchs, and I confirmed on known locations.

However, within the collector app it only shows 16.4 feet even though I known it is much better than that.

Did you ever get this situation figured out??

Yes. With lower level GPS Receivers the integrated receiver setting is to be used. Esri has published a list of tested and viable high accuracy receivers that work directly within the app. The URL of those are above

But I'm still a bit confused.

My Collector is set for integrated receiver and it still says 16.4 feet for accuracy even though the true accuracy is about 15-20 inches and everything else is working great.

Is this just a bug or can it be changed for the real accuracy to be displayed in collector?

I believe it not to be a bug, but further functionality that will be introduced in the next app update. There are two scenarios with collector either you use the integrated receiver or your device is connected from within the collector app settings. The accuracy box I think still needs some work as you can set a threshold but the 16.4 feet must be a default regardless of the true number.

Sounds good Matthew. I still believe that esri should state to use the integrated receiver settings on the links from above if you are suppose to set it to integrated receiver for all compatible devices. You can set up a connection in Collector for ArcGIS for the R1, but the GPS will not work. As long as I am getting good GPS I really don't care but you have to turn up your accuracy settings so it will accept 16.4 feet, which would not be acceptable if this is what the GPS is really returning to the device.

Thanks for the clarification and I am glad that others are experiencing the same things so this will be fixed in future releases.

So I'm having the same issue. R1 is connected to my iOS device. I open Collector and by natural common sense told it under the Location Provider to use the Trimble R1. When doing that I get no GPS location when opening any web map (do not see dot on map or cannot collect a feature).

If I am reading comments above right, you are actually suppose to choose Integrated Receiver and I'll still get the accuracy of the R1? I have an ESRI person working a ticket for me right now and claims they have no issue when setting up an R1 and Collector.

Yes you have to use integrated receiver . That is the only way I can get GPS to be active at all with the latest collector for ArcGIS. I have no idea how esri is getting it to work otherwise with this many people having the same problem.

I also am using integrated receiver and getting sub meter accuracy, even though it shows 16.4.

I just spoke with Gale Shea from Sieler and she is also looking into this scenario.

I will share if she has a work around.

Hi All,

I too had problems getting our location accuracy (bottom left corner of Collector screen) and the blue dot (user’s location) to show up after I selected the Trimble Unit (R1) as the Collector App's "Provider" in Location Settings. I am glad that the GNSS overwrites the GPS no matter what the application displays, however I want my users to be able to know their accuracy while they collect data.

By adding some GNSS Metadata Fields to my feature service in AGO, I was able to get the blue location dot to show up, as well as see my GNSS accuracy.

Step 1: Add some (not all are needed) GNSS Accuracy Metadata Fields to points feature class in AGO, save web map

Step 2: Open iPad settings, connect Bluetooth to GNSS receiver

Step 3: Open GNSS Status App (iPad, Android) and connect to GNSS receiver

Step 4: Open Collector and change “Provider” settings to your GNSS receiver instead of the Integrated Receiver, this will make Collector ask if it can open the GNSS Status App, allow it to do so

Step 5: Open Collector Web Map, it should zoom to where ever you are and you should see your location dot as well as the GNSS receiver accuracy

My experience is that feature services without the GNSS accuracy fields do not allow the GNSS receiver to be the “Provider” in the locations settings. Follow my link above and add the GNSS accuracy fields to your feature service (you can do this in AGO so you don’t have to re-publish the service), then try making your GNSS receiver the “Provider” in Collector without any issues.

Thank you for this detailed information. Hopefully this helps the users that were experiencing issues of current accuracy indicator in Collector for iOS.

I already had GNSS Metadata field from the beginning so maybe this is why I never experienced this issue?

Can someone from the Esri Collector team confirm that you have to have a certain Metadata field in order for the Accuracy location to show up in the Full release of Collector for iOS?

Step 1.5: Create Tracking Feature Layer in AGO and add it to your web map.
