Using Z-enabled layer in Collector - Offline Sync Mode

Hi all,

We currently have an issue where our Z-enabled point layer is unable to be edited using Collector for ArcGIS.

While Collector for ArcGIS is being used online (e.g. with Mobile Data) there are no issues with creating or editing data on our Z-enabled point layer.

While Collector for ArcGIS is being used offline (Using "Download" to download data and basemap) we are unable to create or edit data on our Z-enabled point layer.

To detail the error experience:

IOS: Download Data/BaseMap - Enter Map - Create Feature/Place Feature - Error "The shape must have a Z value"

Android: Download Data/BaseMap - Enter Map - Create Feature/Place Feature - *Nothing Happens* (Usually you would see "Stored on device"

Point Feature Class Details:

Z-enabled, no Vertical Datum, has been published with a default z-value of 0 when edited. ArcGIS Online Hosted Feature layer published from ArcGIS Pro.

I am interested in any work-arounds anyone knows of but I would rather that someone from ESRI is able to confirm the issue.

I don't think screenshots are necessary here, hopefully someone is able to simply replicate if they have the time to check.

Hi Mitchell -- This is a known limitation. From Supported data—Collector for ArcGIS | ArcGIS:

If the feature layer is m-aware or z-aware, you won't be able to collect or update feature geometries. You'll get an error message if you try to submit or update one.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for! Is there any documentation around future support of using z-aware feature layers in Collector to update geometries? I can see that it has been posted as an idea here so I am happy with that.

Collecting data with z-values is something we'll be including in the next generation app, currently in development:

Hello Kylie, is there a current work around if you have a template database that requires layers to be M & Z Aware?

We are currently using the UPDM data model, and are publishing feature services from that database to be edited in the field using Collector. We would like to adhere to this data model as much as possible what is ESRI's suggested work around in the interim.

Bill/Mitchell,

In recent Collector 17.0.3 release, we have some fixes about Z/M. It is BUG-000107837 (Windows 10) BUG-000093694 (iOS) and BUG-000107839 (Android).

If there is default Z/M value, Collector can collect or edit. Can you try with latest release?

Also, if there is existing Z/M, it should work with iOS/Android. Windows Collector has some known issues with existing Z/M.

Support for this will be coming!

ENH-000082601 : When collecting or editing data points in Collector for ArcGIS, provide the ability to collect and update Z values in the same way as X and Y values.

Collector does not support directly storing the altitude on the z-value of a geometry. This will be supported in an upcoming release. Currently, you can capture the altitude values of point features, and use the ProjectZ geoprocessing tool to transfer these values to geometry z-values."

As far as I can tell, using Classic Collector, M/Z data still cannot be utilized reliably. I'm assuming the comment that the Collector 17.0.3 release, having fixes for Z/M was referring to Classic Collector and not the Aurora version.

Also, in doing research to see if this is still an issue, I found this article that doesn't even mention M/Z when preparing data for Classic Collector.

I'm going to go with Classic Collector cannot use M/Z aware data to be safe.
