Is there a way to do this with a dynamic map layer?

I can do it all day long with a feature layer because the geometry is exposed. get the extent, center the map, set the scale kind of thing...

I want to use a dynamic map layer in this case because the users have no need for the geometry, and dynamic map layers render faster.

I really do not want to have a dynamic map layer and feature layer to get the rendering and the zoom control, I would prefer just one.

Thoughts?

Thanks
