Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to display the M values along a polyline?
This is essential to the purpose of my application and will mean that I have to revert back to version 10 if it is no longer possible.
The problem is that when trying to publish the service to the server, previously one could log directly in to the server and publish an MXD but not one is forced to create a service definition which fails if Route Hatching is used, is there a way to override/ignore this?

its probably a better question for the ArcGIS Server -general forum, but i am under the impression that MSD based publishing at 10.1 does not support hatching.

i know it doesn't help in this particular case, but the devs did create a 10.1 sample Dynamic Segmentation SOE to demonstrate how you can use ArcObjects to display measures on the fly

http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2011/08/19/a-server-object-extension-for-performing-dynamic-segmentation/

here you can see what is supported in msd in 10 http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/0053/00530000003t000000.htm
Hatching doesn't supported.
However you can use polyline M in msd and you can do identify: I have made a soe extension rest for 10 and 10.1 (you can use with web client: js, sl, flex) : http://resources.arcgis.com/gallery/file/Print-Rest-SOE/details?entryID=46F00F42-1422-2418-7F40-F039E02AA2F7
