Dynamic Table of Contents and loading icon during map redraw

I am using a dynamic layer list table of contents. I would like to show the loading icon during the time when the layer is checked/unchecked and the map reloads with the correct set of visible layers. Does anyone know how check when the map has finished being drawn with the new set of visible layers?

I am sure this would also help in several other places where I am using timers to sequence function calls...

Did you ever solve this problem? The lack of an egg-timer type re-draw icon is going to cause confusion with my users.

I haven't found a solution to this yet, and yes it really is confusing. To show the loading icon sometimes (on panning and zooming), but not others (turning on/off layers), to a user would indicate that something went wrong with the application when there is a delay without results...
