Does anyone know if the sample viewer team plans to upgrade, change / modify the JS sample viewer in the near future ?

From talking with the ESRI folks at the Conference and through emails, there is no longer any support for the javascript sample viewer. If you want an upgraded version, you will need to do it yourself. There are posts in the old thread which tell you how to upgrade to at least 1.6

we currently have no plans to update the ArcGIS API for Javascript Viewer Sample. This sample was posted early as an unsupported viewer. I encourage you to have a look at the ArcGIS.com Javascript Viewer. See recent blog post here.

Hello, Ismael, in the last 2011 ESRI European Conference, people from ESRI presented the "ArcGIS Viewer for Javascript", that could be accessed through the URL http://links.esri.com/javascript. Sorry, but I'm not able to find this configurable sample viewer for download and instructions to configure it. In the URL http://resources.arcgis.com/content/web/web-apps I have moticed that there is no reference to this viewer, while there are links to the "ArcGIS Viewer for Flex" and the "ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight". Have ESRI discontinued this viewer?

It hasnt been updated in years. We extensively modified it when it came out, so we are basically committed to it. It was never template/drag and drop. It was always a customize the code type approach.

Apparently there are interest there, and Esri may not be able to pull enough resource together to do this anytime soon (considering original version has been unchanged for quite a few years), I was wondering if there is enough commitment from user community to produce one?

There are a couple approaches, such as upgrade from the original JS version, or start from one of the simpler templates on arcgis.com and evolve that into something equivalent to the counterparts in sliverlight or flex.

The current arcgis.com is quite good at authoring, but kind of missing the capability to customization, and the those customizable templates are not as comprehensive as the flex/silverlight viewers. Pre-defined query/search etc are completely missing(think the deprecated Web ADF), so there are lots of work, but I think the user community can pull it off with collective effort.

Thoughts?

ESRI seems to be committed to the ArcGIS.com hosted configuration solution for JavaScript, which is unfortunate for those of us whose IT infrastructure drops internet connectivity routinely or at all concerned with continuing to provide our applications in an EOC where the internet is lost.

The other viewers (Flex/Silverlight) have their own issues and will become depreciated as the popularity of those plug-ins decreases but they are much more GIS Specialist friendly (especially with the Flex Viewer application builder). Microsoft has already announced the lack of an upgrade path for Silverlight in the coming years- how far is Flash behind that?

A Sample JavaScript viewer is ideal all the way around and it would certainly help me move away from using the Sample Flex Viewer to serve our web applications. Unfortunately, I don't have the JS skills to produce such a viewer and every time I look at moving to JS, I am stymied by the push to the hosted configurations.

Have you looked into the app templates from ArcGIS.com? You might be interested in the basic viewer app template.

Another option would be to use Portal to host your own ArcGIS.com�??like site.

I'm looking at a download of the basic viewer hosted on my local server right now it is the epitome of what my previous post talked about. It is way too dependent on internet connectivity for each of the clients- the first 25 lines are filled with references to externally hosted API links. Without severe modifications ( excising all external calls), it cannot replicate the stand-alone SFV as the old JS Viewer could.

The Portal might be an option �?? depending on price and cost to implement. However, the SFV seems to be the right answer for now but I feel like I'm sinking ever more development costs into a doomed product (Flash) and my alternatives are worse (although simply learning enough JS to build an Viewer from scratch may be worth it in the long run).

As I said, we have spent about a year extensively modifying the original Sample Viewer. It runs completely internally, as well as to the public, all from one server.

There were some votes on ideas.esri.com on this topic and even a "workspace" setup for it. Out of curiosity I requested access to it but there is nothing in the workspace. Makes me wonder if it is lack of need, interest, or resource.

Making the portal/arcgis.com viewer available for customization would be a quick win, I would be interested to know what's the barrier of preventing that from happening, is it supportability, licensing concern, or something else that end users are not supposed to know?

Another question: i want to hide the widget on top right (widgetcontroller with 3 buttons ) when starting or when no widget is opened and show it when i open a widget

I wouldnt put in aspx, but that is just a preference.

Hiding the widgetcontainer should be easy.

1: in the WidgetContainer,html add an id to line 2 and set to hidden for startup

2: in WidgetContainer.js add code to toggle in opening and closing widgets
in onShowWidget
under if (widget)
