I have been creating profile graphs from terrains for several months now and today when I go in to create one the graph line looks more like a stair step than the smooth graphs I have gotten in the past. What has changed, or what can I change to get the profile graph to be a smooth graph again?

I do not know why this happens, but it has happened to me before many times. I have found that if you open a new ArcMap document and add your TIN or Terrain first then the profile tool will work fine (uses decimal elevations instead of rounding to integers).

This may be an old thread, but I thought I'd point out that there is also a 'stairs' line mode. I don't believe it is on by default so it may not be the answer to this problem, but if you see your data looking 'blocky' look to see if this option is checked. It is located in the profile graph 'advanced properties' under the 'series' tab and 'format' page.
