Jeff

I have followed you instructions, I built a shapefile and extruded down using the extrusion tab in the properties, used the Layer 3D to feature class and then Is Closed 3D, however it seems it doesnt want to Intersect 3D and the error message says that the feature is non closed even though i have run Is Closed 3D. Any suggestions? I even tried running the process with a single line but it didnt like that either.

Cheers

Hi there

I want to perform an intersect 3D, exactly the same as in the subsurface editing video in the attached link,

http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/extensions/3danalyst/demos.html

I cant make the shapefile/grid/cross-sections to be able to create the fence diagram, as in the last step taken in the video. I have sucessfully created the surfaces and extracted between them and have that ready to go, just need help creating the trasects.

Cheers
Dewi

I think I just figured this out today, but I haven't actually tried it. I think you need to create lines at the surface (not sure it matters if they are 3d or not), then set the base height somewhere above your surface elevation (just to make sure it cuts everything), then extrude that line down into the subsurface as far as you need to cut through all your layers. Then, I think you could use the Intersect 3D tool.

Does that help?

Once you have created the line network and extruded it to intersect the geology data. You will have to convert the extruded line into a multipatch to work with the Intersect 3d tool. I would use the Layer 3d to Feature Class to create a multipatch from the line. Be sure to use the Is Closed 3d tool as well, because unclosed multipatches are ignored in the processing.

Hi dewijones:

The Is Closed 3D tool doesn't actually close the multipatch features, it just tests to see whether they are closed or not and reports its results in the feature attribute table. I wish it did, I am also trying to intersect 3D multipatches and not having any luck because the tools don't create closed multipatches.

In order to intersect 2 multipatch features, all features in the operation have to be closed. To consider a multipatch features to be closed it has to fully enclose a volume. In the video link, what looks like line grid must be closed multipatch features created from polygons not lines. You can extrude lines and create multipatch features from them using the Layer 3D to Feature Class tool however this will NOT create a closed multipatch since these multipatch features DO NOT contain a volume.

I suggest you buffer your lines by a small number (flat-end buffers require ArcInfo) then extrude these thin polygons and convert to multipatch features. This way the resulting Intersect 3D operation will succeed.

related info here
