David, this is an excellent question. If Esri were to decide to support this format, it would be a large change. For the benefit of other readers of this post who aren't in Geophysics, Geophysical voxel volumes can easily be hundred of gigabytes to the terabyte range --- this would be typical for offshore 3D reflection stacked seismic cubes in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, etc. Supporting the format is one thing, but creating a system which is performant from end-to-end for these types of voxel volume sizes is a completely different matter. But it's a great idea. I've always thought that if a software vendor were to offer seismic interpretation and an ArcGIS Pro extension it would have an immediate following.

Volume Data Store (VDS) is a storage format for fast random access to multi-dimensional (up to 6D) volumetric data. Oil & Gas companies working to OSDU standard are working with this data format and it's fast becoming the de-facto standard for streaming data in the Geophysical industry.

An open-source reference software implementation which can read and write VDS has been contributed by Bluware Inc. to the OSDU. This implementation is named OpenVDS and supports several programming languages. It can be included in software products with no encumberments towards Bluware Inc.

Does anyone at ESRI know if there are plans to support this format? Or perhaps conversion tools to get VDS to Voxel?
