Does anyone know if there is a function used to determine the appropriate contour intervals for a given DEM?

For example, if I have a raster with 50m cell sizes, what is the best contour interval to generate regardless of the data extent or terrain?

The DEM was produced from stereo imagery. I have the post spacing and point density images, but I still can't find any literature that addresses this problem. I would like to find something that says the relationship between DEM's and contours is based on more than a hunch.

thanks anyway
-hh
