Hello Heidi,

Attachments can be uploaded by clicking the Manage Attachments option that displays beneath the New Post dialog. Here's the relevant information from the FAQ:

How do I attach a file to a post?

To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.

On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page.

To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?

In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.

I had posted this in the old forum as I didn't know there was this new system. My apologies for cross-posting.

I have created a scene in ArcScene. When I try to apply a 3D marker symbol to a point shapefile in my scene, the program crashes with this error message: "ArcGIS Desktop has encountered a serious application error and is unable to continue."

My scene has three layers only:
1. A point shapefile with one point
2. a TIN of seabed elevation data
3. a raster of land elevation

I am trying to symbolize my point with as a 3D marker with a .3ds file.

I have tried creating a whole new scene several times with no success. I have increased the size of my virtual memory with no success.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem? I am supposed to be creating an animation for a client but I can 't get beyond this problem.

Thanks!

Heidi Leighton

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for supplying the .3ds. However, we were unable to reproduce the crash you were experiencing, in-house. We tried on many points as well.
I have a few more questions for you which may help us figure out whats going on.

(1). Are you still testing on Beta? Or have you updated to the Pre-Release version which is now available?
(2). Is the model textured (uses many images draped on the 3DS geometry)? If so those files were not attached - so could be why we could not totally reproduce your issue.

Thanks,
Karen
3D-Team

I have the 3D Analyst obviously, as I have been trying to develop a 3D scene. The software is installed on a machine running Vista (64 bit version) - this may or may not be important.

The .3ds model I ma using doesn't have any textures.

Heidi

Which application did you use to create the .3ds model? As for 64bit version, i believe that officially it is supported (will run) although ArcGIS gains no advantage as will only run at 32 bit, utilize a maximum of 2GB RAM and only one core if multi-core processor is used.

I did not create the 3D model. I received the model from my client who asked me to insert it into the scene and run a fly through animation over it.

I have also tried bringing the model in as a .dae file. This file type also crashes ArcScene.

The reason i am asking is that i have had problems with SketchUp models version 7 and greater but no problems with the version 6 or lesser. Not sure what the input model was created with but there might a compatibility issue. (As for Sketchup version 6 is supported but newer versions are not)

I have come back around to this project and I am still having the same issue of ArcScene crashing when I try to symbolize my point with a 3d marker. I am wondering if the reason may be the graphics card I have in this computer. I know ESRI folks were not able to recreate the issue and maybe they have a higher performance graphics card? I am interested in hearing anyone's experience using ArcScene and 3d models with different graphics cards.

My computer is a Studio XPS 435 MT, Intel Core i7-940 processor, with a 512 MB ATI Radeon HS 4850 graphics card.

Thanks!
