3D Analyst - Surface Spot for terrains

Hi all,
I want to extract elevation data from a terrain to a point feature class, like in the Surface Spot tool. However, in ArcGIS 9.3, Surface Spot won't accept terrains as surface input (what is the difference between a terrain and a surface?). Any suggestions that do not involve converting the terrain to a raster or tin?
How are we supposed to use terrains instead of tins when such analysis-tools are not working with terrains?

New at 10 is that you can run most analytical operators that work with TINs directly against Terrains.
1 exception: �??Extrude between�??.

The surface spot command is no longer available.
What tool will work the same procedure?

Can the TIN Editing toolbar be used with Terrains? What about TIN Domain? TIN Triangle? Raster to TIN?

In ArcGIS 10 I tried using the add surface information using a Point feature class (FC) and a terrain. The tool is supposed to add a field and add the elevation information, like the surface spot in 9.3.1 for Tin's and grids, but it did not do so. I tried converting the Terrain to a Tin but it failed due to to many points. Any suggestions?

Did you try altering the Maximum Number of Nodes? Do not use any limit and then try converting Terrain to TIN again. Once completed, you can use the TIN Node tool to obtain point features.
