Hello i was wondering if someone from ESRI could help me.

I recently bought the 3D Visualization Techniques Using ArcGIS 10 online training course.

It's been going great so far and I've leant loads of new stuff however I'm having problems with one of the exercises.

The issue is with Sun.sxd in Exercise: Set illumination and background color (ArcScene).

ArcScene keeps freezing whenever I try to display the image. I think it's to do with the TIN and maybe my computer isnt powerful enough.

Has anyone else had issues with this? I cant actually complete the exercise as it's taking so long to open the TIN.

Sorry i might be being a bit of a pain now. The following sentence in the Extrusion section states that:

"In the following video, you will see how extrusion stretches points, lines, and polygons vertically into lines, walls, and boxes, respectively."

However in the very next section after this it is stayed that:

"Extrusion is the three-dimensional extension of features. An extruded point becomes a line; an extruded line becomes a wall; an extruded polygon becomes a block."

So what I was wondering is if an extruded polygon is know as a box or a block, or can you use either of these terms?

I've even tried opening it on VMware system with 3D acceleration disabled - no problems.
But when I enabled Ocean layer, the performance drastically decreased.

Have you tried opening blank ArcScene project and adding ...\3DVisualize10_0\sbislandtin TIN to map? Does it open correctly?

Yes it does open but everytime I do something to it I get the blue circle spinning around for 5 mins before the action is carried out

The graphics card for the computer is a ATI Firepro 2260.

I'm using ArcGIS 10.1

Go to the layer properties > symbology tab. Hit the Add button on the left. The Add Renderer dialog will open. Add something like 'Face slope with graduated color ramp'. The other people who reported the issue indicated it was a problem only with 'Face elevation with graduated color ramp'. At least that was my understanding. I didn't submit the defect or work directly with the customers except via forum. The issue eventually made its way to our Support staff would looked into it and found a way to repro using ATI hardware.

Don't forget to turn off the elevation renderer.

Best,
Eric
