Create Z for Polyline Vertices using DEM

I am working with new polylines and trying to figure out a way to populate the Vertices "Z" column using a DEM. I have tried the 3D "Add Surface Information Tool" but no luck.

In that case you will want Interpolate Shape—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop as Kyle Balke, GISP suggested earlier. This will create 3D features. To add the Z value as an attribute, you can use Calculating area, length, and other geometric properties—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop .

Right click on the field and select "Calculate Geometry..."

And in the dialog windows that appears select "Z Coordinate of Point":

The Interpolate Shape tool was a good suggestion, but the routine fails. Something about the Table was not found. JohnH

What is the path to the data? No funny characters in the path? " " (spaces) "-" any other funny stuff. Keep paths simple.

Also did you run the tool via ArcMap and a selected layer. Try running it from ArcCatalog instead and pick the actual data.

Can you post the exact error message and describe the input data (type of raster and format of polyline featureclass) you are using?

Ensure both the DEM and feature layer in the same coordinate system.

This does not provide me with a lot of information of the types of input data. Could you include the information of the layer provided in the Source tab of the properties for both the DEM and the polyline featureclass?

The DEM is available in Geographic coordinates NAD83. I have no problem pulling in Z for the attributes, it's just when I try to add Z to the actual Vertices of a polyline.

Here is a list of raster formats supported by ArcGIS: Supported raster dataset file formats—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop Could you please tell me in what format your DEM is? Or do you have a TIN or a surface?

I finally got the "Interpolate Shape" process to work!

As Kyle pointed out, the data being used needs to be in the same coordinate system. In this case, it was Geographic coordinates NAD 83. In Edit mode, looking at the Sketch Properties, all my line vertices now have Z values. I will also add that using the "Z Factor" is a handy way to convert from Meters to Feet.
