Thanks Joshua! Good Idea and tried it already. But I would only need the outer circumference line of the whole area. So just the outlaying polygons of an area and from them the outer border. So lets say the USA: I have all states as polygons and I need just the border of the whole USA as line.

Dear Community, in my data there are multiple polygons of an area. Is i simply possible to create a line circumference shape out of all polygons? So I just need the outlaying (line) border of the outlaying polygons plotted. Thanks in adavance! Best regards Andreas

Hi community, how can I illustrate a map of event impacts: I have a table 1 with location IDs (simple points) and another table 2 with events, where the location ID is also stored. How can i now combine this two tables to show graphically, if there had been more or less events on a location. e.g. If an event appeared 10 times at location x then there should be a bigger point?/cloud? compared to location y, where just one event took place. Thanks in advance! Andreas

No networfk. Coordinate-S. is "DHDN_3_Degree_Gauss_Zone_3" which should be a projected? I got a gdb but used "feature class to shapefile" and saved the outcome in an own folder and reopened the shape - and tried it on this? perhaps to unexperienced and I did just something wrong? sended you a msg - thanks for this offerbest

Hello, I mapped a couple of agricultural fields in a landscape with polygon features - so in the attribute table there are the shape_area and shape_length (=circumference) values available. For this values I can calculate the Median/Average values etc.. But is it possibility to calculate how the average (median etc...) polygon/field shape looks like?So what's the average (median) length and witdh of all fields? Of course there are fields which are not 'exact' square I-shaped but also L-shaped, somewhat O-shaped etc.. So therefore anyway impossible? best regards Andreas

started the same project after 2 yrs again - and again the same problem as described above. Dan_Patterson: why did you mention copying the file? What's the idea behind this workaround? This helped, but after some process runs, the problem is the same. Also: If I'm using NEAR with two near features - x and y - just the distance to "x" is calculated and "y" is completely ignored? best regards

try running it on a local machine with files in a folder in a new project hey, now it worked after copying the project folder to the other hdd partition. but after copying it back again to the orignal directory the -1 error again appears. I use relativ paths in my geodatabase. Is there some kind of cache which could influence this? regards andreas

try running it on a local machine with files in a folder in a new project hm, I'm running my data just on my local machine and also tried before to copy the project folder to another location running the NEAR process out of this. The problem with the permission just appears after running NEAR or now also occurs after I copied some selected rows of the attribute table in a new feature class to append afterwards to another. Than I have to save and restart ArcInfo to get editing permission again.

I recognized, that after this NEAR run, when starting an editing session I always get this warning including also the Input Feature for the NEAR run "Bruchfl_S": Text on doublekl: "This layer or table is read-only, or you lack the proper permissions to edit it. Solution: Check the file properties in Windows Explorer to make sure you have write access to the geodatabase, files that compose the shapefile, or the folder that contains the data you want to edit. This can commonly happen if you have copied data from a DVD or CD-ROM. If you are using data from an ArcSDE geodatabase, ensure that the data is registered as versioned and you have write access to the version."

You know how to do 'join by attribute', correct? The key is to have a common field values with which to perform this join... So how is this done? You can 'preserve attributes' in converting Feature To Line. I think choosing that option will result in the 'old' FID written to the 'new' line fc with the fieldname, 'FID_<fcName>'. So you could join by attribute back to the orig fc FID using this preserved FID. Test this to be sure it behaves as you expect. Below is a rough outline of how it's done: - run Feature to Line on poly fc with 'preserve attributes' on (this may be 'on' by default) - if your orig poly fc name is 'impact', let's just say, then look in your Feature to Line output for a field 'FID_impact'... - visually inspect and verify the line features' FID_impact values match the poly features' FID. - join by attribute FID_impact to FID....or to permanently join the fields to the target poly fc, use the Join Field tool Check this out: Join Field http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//001700000065000000 worked out fine - thank you! king regards andreas

Do you have a selection? Are all the files in the same coordinate system? (preferably a projected one) See the discussion in the help files http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00080000001q000000 I took care not to have a selection and all features have the same coordinate system. I ve to mention, that a view days ago the NEAR calculation worked with this feature. Just a view points had -1 which I also couldnt figure out why in fact, they dont intercept each other. On further runs now I also got -1 using the points on other features? The run now also takes plenty of time. Before it worked very fast? Ist there some kind of cache? Any validating possibility to figure out an error? king regards andreas
