I had the same problem listed above. I am installing on a new windows server 2008 r2 system with no other programs on the system. I was given the name of the system from Site administration and can not change it. They set them in the DNS server and the names conform to their naming conventions. Anyway I uninstalled AGS and went into /window/system32/drivers/etc/host and added an entry for the IP that they have me however I changed the name to something that has no dashes or underscores. Like this 111.xxx.33.33 newhostname. Where the old name was new-host-name. Then I reinstalled AGS and all is well installation went by the book after that. Apparently AGS looks to the host file before it looks for the name on DNS. So name it what you want locally and let them call you what they want externally.

I have installed apache2.2/tomcat 7 on my windows server 2003. Apache is up. tomcat is up. Arcgis server 10.1 is up. I can connect to it from another machine with arcmap. I followed the instructions for installing arcgis_js_jsapi. However the instructions are only for IIS. So what I did was load it into the webapps directory in tomcat. Then I change the HOSTNAME AND PATH in the files listed in the instructions. Tomcat shows that arcgis_js_jsapi is running. Then I loaded the the arcgis webadaptor and configured it accourding to it's instructions. Now I am trying the to test it using the test map HTML file given with the arcgis_js_jsapi instructions. I doesn't work. My Tomcat directories look like this: My tomcat webapps directory look like this
\webapps \arcgis /* this is the webadaptor \arcgis_js_jsapi /* the javascript library \library \3.2 \jsapi js \dgrid \dojo \esri \put-selector \xstyle \jsapicompact
I did not change anything in the any WEB-INF directories. Should I? This the test HTML I am using.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <title>Test Map</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://gsdserver1:8090/arcgis_js_api/library/3.2/jsapi/js/dojo/dijit/themes/tundra/tundra.css"/> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://gsdserver1:8090/arcgis_js_api/library/3.2/jsapi/js/esri/css/esri.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://gsdserver1:8090/arcgis_js_api/library/3.2/jsapi/init.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> alert("before require"); dojo.require("esri.map"); alert("after require"); function init() { alert("Inside init") var myMap = new esri.Map("mapDiv"); //note that if you do not have public Internet access then you will need to point this url to your own locally accessible cached service. var myTiledMapServiceLayer = new esri.layers.ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer("http://gsdserver1:8090/arcgis/rest/services/SampleWorldCities/MapServer"); myMap.addLayer(myTiledMapServiceLayer); } alert("before onload") dojo.addOnLoad(init); </script> </head> <body class="tundra"> <h1> Test Map try # 1</h1> <div id="mapDiv" style="width:900px; height:600px; border:1px solid #000;"></div> </body> </html>
I am setting up to develop web applications using arcgis server 10.1 and eclipse. We are using windows servers but are using apache/tomcat. I have the AGS up and I can connect to it with Arcmap. Now I have seen several little how-tos to that hit on how to install the esri plug-in on eclipse. However, they don't say a thing about how to get the damn plug in! Where is it? How do I get a copy?

All I want to do is to change the size and color of the points in a layer file. Easy to do in Arcmap. Impossible in arcpy? Shouldn't be.

DDP won't do it for this one I think. Here is what I came up with. It works.
import arcpy
mxd = arcpy.mapping.MapDocument("CURRENT")
df = arcpy.mapping.ListDataFrames(mxd)[0] #Change the [number] to whichever dataframe you want to use (0 is the first dataframe, 1 in the second, etc.)
rows = arcpy.SearchCursor(pointsLyr.dataSource)
cols = arcpy.ListFields(pointsLyr.dataSource)
for row in rows:
for col in cols:
if col.name == "LATITUDE":
latstr = row.getValue(col.name)
if col.name == "LONGITUDE":
lonstr = row.getValue(col.name)
if col.name == "OBJECTID":
objstr = str(row.getValue(col.name))
arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management(pointsLyr.dataSource,"NEW_SELECTION", ("%s = %s" % (col.name, objstr)
newextent = df.extent
xmin = float(lonstr) - .005
ymin = float(latstr) - .005
xmax = float(lonstr) + .005
ymax = float(latstr) + .005
newextent.XMin, newextent.YMin newextent.XMax newextent.YMax = xmin, ymin, xmax, ymax
df.extent = newextent
df.panToExtent(df.extent)
arcpy.RefreshActiveView()
It seems to work just fine. The .005 number is basically the size. So this could be define elsewhere and passed in as a parameter. Thank for the hint.

I am trying to figure out how to zoom to a point in arcpy. My client would like to hand me a shape file with points in it. Each point represents the center of an area that they want to create a PDF of. So given a point how can I set the extent of my dataframe and panToExtent. The radius of each extent is no more that 500m. So what I think will happen is I will iterate through the Points one by one. Zoom to the point set the extern to R = 500m and ExportToPDF move on to the next point. Any help? Thanks.

Null What? None should work for Null pointers thing is an object. if thing == None : thing is a string one thing about strings however is users sometimes put man blank charagers in a string. So it looks empty but "" will fail. So you need to check thing.len() == 0 first. if thing == "":

In future releases of Arc 10.x. It seems to me that ESRI could find out where the conflict is with Tkinter and fix it. ESRI seem to be using Python as the main scripting language. Which I think is a good idea. But, if they are, they should adopt it fully and not just the scripting part. That way we developers could bring the whole weight of the Vast python set of tool to bear on any problem we find.

Ok I got the Zip file and am working with it. I still can't get it to work. In the code of calling_script.py (I change to path to where I have it.) You have: try: arcpy.ImportToolbox(r"D:\Myprojects\Arcscripts\POPUP\PopUp.tbx") result = arcpy.PopupInputBox_popup("A message from Popupbox") the "PopupInputBox_popup" is not resolved and the script won't run. Also the test model has a Red "X" in it and won't run. What now. This is much harder that using Tkinter.

Thanks Mathew, That didn't work. Should I have set data driven page to on? Also, I put a debug statement in the the for loop and it never goes in there. Is "TEXT_ELEMENT" really what I'm looking for? Thanks
