Hey thanks that was the problem! I changed the "Keep results younger than:" value to Never Save. Now it exits in under a second.

When I exit ArcCatalog it takes about 2 minutes with a "Not responding" message at the top of the app. What would cause this? I have the application installed on a SSD drive. Any ideas how to speed this up? Thanks

Hi Dan, I was using py 2.7.2 with Arc 10.1 recently went through all the steps to upgrade to Arc 10.3. Ran installs for: - ArcGIS_Desktop_103_141985.exe - Python_278_64bit_144162.exe - ArcGIS_BackgroundGP_for_Desktop_103_141996.exe I don't remember if I ran the install for Python32bit, maybe that's the problem. and I don't recall the order of the installs for the last 2. The process did an uninstall of 10.1 however I don't know how clean that is. Found a few patches for 10.3 yesterday on ESRI's site and installed those with no luck. 10.1 and py2.7.2 was solid for me. If there's no known bugs I may have to try a uninstall/reinstall, or go back down to 10.1 First I'll test my project on an older 10.1 machine. Thanks

I have a Win7 64bit machine and recently upgraded from 10.1 to 10.3 A script that used to work fine now finishes incomplete without tripping any error messages. How would I troubleshoot this? I added "try: except Exception as e: " logic but it does nothing. On the latest attempt, the last print statement to show up in my shell was for line 122 of the 573 line script. Then it ended with the usual shell prompt like below. ================= RESTART ============ >>>

Hi, I'm having difficulty with loading some data into SDE. I have a large provincial resultant in SDE and a script that will process small parcels, delete the old parcel from the resultant in SDE, and then append the new data into the SDE layer. However often it fails with ERROR 000224: Cannot insert features Then the layer cannot draw for anyone in Arcmap giving the error: The specified coordinate exceeds the valid coordinate range. I am on ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 and ArcSDE 10.1 Appreciate any suggestions to troubleshoot this. Frank

I've found the Buffer command to be occasionally stubborn. Here are a few things I do to avoid the 999999 error. 1. Make sure you are processing in a workspace on your local hard drive with sufficient memory. 2. Don't use the Dissolve option. Dissolve the data in a later step with the Dissolve tool. 3. Output your features with the SinglePart option. 4. Run Repair Geometry on input data before the Buffer process if necessary. 5. Try closing other applications to free up memory 6. Last resort clip your input data into tiles, buffer the tiles of data and append back together. Good luck. Frank

What is the workflow for using Non-registered oracle tables in modelbuilder or python? This used to work fine for me in 10.0 but not in 10.1 arcpy.MakeTableView_management("Database Connections\\Forest.odc\\FOREST.V_BLOCKS", "FOREST_View", "BLOCK_ID = 'AA123'", "", "DIVISION DIVISION VISIBLE NONE;CUTB_SEQ_NBR CUTB_SEQ_NBR VISIBLE NONE;BLOCK_ID BLOCK_ID VISIBLE NONE;....")
arcpy.CopyRows_management("FOREST_View", "CUTB_TABLE", "") I only expect 1 record, not all 50,000+ My understanding is that it has to do with the table not being registered, but there must be a way to work with non registered tables. Thanks, Frank

I follow you now. Even though I have the 64bit background processing available, when I run the CalculateField in Modelbuilder with the "VB" syntax, it knows to use the 32bit python. I modified the CalculateField code to Python syntax and it ran successfully in Idle 64bit. If I am too lazy to modify my code in other scripts, then I must use 32bit python. Thanks very much, Frank

Do you mean it's not supported within Python? Because in ArcGIS 10.1 if I bring up the Field Calculator there is a Parser box with a choice of VB Script and Python. The Calculate Field tool in Model Builder also has a droplist for Expression Type and the default choice is VB, and it works fine. I'd really hate to have to change all the CalculateField code in all my scripts... It must be something related specifically to Python. My version of ArcGIS says 10.1 SP1 for Desktop (Build 3143) if that helps.

Hi, I was previously using 10.0 on Win7 32-bit and have made the leap to 10.1 on Win7 64-bit. For some reason a script that previously ran fine is now failing when it hits a CalculateField command. The exact error message is: "ERROR 000989: Tool CalculateField cannot use VB expressions for services" import arcpy # Local variables: Strata_TSA_VRI_bk = "E:\\Projects\\FMG_WTP_Overlays.gdb\\Strata_TSA_VRI_bk" Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer = "Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer" Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer__3_ = "Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer" # Process: Make Feature Layer arcpy.MakeFeatureLayer_management(Strata_TSA_VRI_bk, Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer, "", "", "OBJECTID OBJECTID VISIBLE NONE;SHAPE SHAPE VISIBLE NONE;SISH_SEQ_NBR SISH_SEQ_NBR VISIBLE NONE;SISH_STRATUM_NAME SISH_STRATUM_NAME VISIBLE NONE;CROWN_CLOSURE CROWN_CLOSURE VISIBLE NONE;VRI_LIVE_STEMS_PER_HA VRI_LIVE_STEMS_PER_HA VISIBLE NONE;VRI_DEAD_STEMS_PER_HA VRI_DEAD_STEMS_PER_HA VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_1 SPECIES_CD_1 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_1 SPECIES_PCT_1 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_2 SPECIES_CD_2 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_2 SPECIES_PCT_2 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_3 SPECIES_CD_3 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_3 SPECIES_PCT_3 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_4 SPECIES_CD_4 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_4 SPECIES_PCT_4 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_5 SPECIES_CD_5 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_5 SPECIES_PCT_5 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_CD_6 SPECIES_CD_6 VISIBLE NONE;SPECIES_PCT_6 SPECIES_PCT_6 VISIBLE NONE;PROJ_AGE_1 PROJ_AGE_1 VISIBLE NONE;PROJ_HEIGHT_1 PROJ_HEIGHT_1 VISIBLE NONE;SHAPE_Length SHAPE_Length VISIBLE NONE;SHAPE_Area SHAPE_Area VISIBLE NONE") # Process: Select Layer By Attribute arcpy.SelectLayerByAttribute_management(Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer, "NEW_SELECTION", "\"SPECIES_CD_1\" = 'FDI'") # Process: Calculate Field arcpy.CalculateField_management(Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer__3_, "SPECIES_CD_1", "\"FD\"", "VB", "") Traceback (most recent call last): File "E:\Projects\j4.py", line 22, in <module> arcpy.CalculateField_management(Strata_TSA_VRI_bk_Layer__3_, "SPECIES_CD_1", "\"FD\"", "VB", "") File "C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.1\arcpy\arcpy\management.py", line 3129, in CalculateField raise e ExecuteError: Failed to execute. I have used VB syntax in all my scripts and I'd rather not change everything to Python syntax. I have also tested this CalculateField command in ModelBuilder. It executes sucessfully, just failing in the Python IDLE window. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Frank

Looking for some code samples that will automate the creation of a square or rectangle polygon of a specific dimension into a target layer when the user clicks a custom button. Not sure where to find sample code similar to this. Is there a better place to ask this? This would be used in ArcGIS 10.1 Thanks, Frank

My road network was previously in Shapefile format and the editing/building of the network used to work fine. I have now converted it to a featureclass in a file geoDB. I was able to create the Network dataset using these features, however when I need to edit the data, such as adding a new road, or fixing a broken road segment I am unable to rebuild the network. I get the error "Build network dataset failed. The logical network is of an older version and does not support the requested functionality. Is there no longer a need to rebuild a network after editing in .gdb format? Thanks for any comments or assistance you can provide, Frank
