I need to be able to change the default heading of a feature class using the graduated colors symbology- it defaults to the original field name being used to classify the data. It does not look like it can be changed to either a custom heading nor does it appear to use an alias assigned to the field. One workaround was to symbolize on categories instead of quantities because the heading in categories can be changed; and Arcmap does read the alias in the symbology editor tab. This is not a good workaround for this dataset as it adds more effort. Manually grouping and regrouping every time the feature class is updated. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am really hoping I am missing a setting somewhere that will allow me to do this), Tim

I am getting this error running the select layer by attribute in a python script. I cannot upgrade to 10 and I do not think I can nor do I want to use either of the suggested workarounds as it would greatly increase the size of hte script and the processing time. What I am doing is selecting a boundary layer that meets certain criteria using the code below. The code selects line segments with a certain codes and flags a polygon layer three different times with different code types. The spatial join and the intersect would not cleanly do this for me. Any suggestions? Thanks, Tim S. gp.selectlayerbyattribute_management(bndryLyr, oprtr["new"], tdlShr); showGpMessage() #including showGpMessage() after every gp tool will write the gp messages to the log file message = "attributes selected"; showPyMessage() gp.selectlayerbylocation_management(bndryLyr,"SHARE_A_LINE_SEGMENT_WITH", plnrLyr); showGpMessage() #including showGpMessage() after every gp tool will write the gp messages to the log file message = "select by location!"; showPyMessage()

Just a suggestion, but Laptops and it looks like many handheld GPSs are moving away from serial connections and since Garmin is a nice, cost effective GPS it would seem that including an emulator in ArcPad to fix this issue would be a good thing. We still use ArcPad for a lot of our recreational grade GPSs, but we are moving to other proprietary data collection software because of the number of hoops that you have to jump through to get this up and running. If you all fixed this and made tables easier to create/customize I think you would be golden.

Denise, We are using both Garmin 60csx and 60s models. Both allow for the NMEA sentence structures, and we can get Garmins to work with ArcPad (on a DELL laptop) using a serial port. However, we cannot get ArcPad to recognize either Garmin model using a USB. Is there a secert to this working outside of the norm (making sure both ArcPad and Garmin set to NEMA, BAUD rate etc)? Also, there only appears to be COM ports, should there not be a USB selection under the port drop down in ArcPad settings? This has been attempted on multiple laptops and using both Garmin models, which is unfortunate because new laptops and the Garmin 62 series do not have native serial components and we have had to install software that emulates a serial port as the work around. Thanks for your response!!! Also as a follow up here is a response we have gotten back from our local ESRI team about our issues Dave, I have been communicating with the ArcPad development team, and it seems that at this stage that you need to use something like GpsGate in order to use a USB GPS with ArcPad. I did some searching and found what could be free a alternative to GpsGate: http://www.curioustech.net/xport.html I have not tested this, as my laptop is running Windows 7 64-bit and Xport does not support 64-bit. But this may be a solution for you. I am also working with the ArcPad development team to get this issue changed in a future version of ArcPad, but at this stage there is nothing definite. Regards, Shane Thanks again, Tim

Todd, Thanks for your response. We have been trying to make this work for some time now unsuccessfully. Using the find utility in ArcPad and having all the correct settings we cannot get ArcPad to recognize any Garmin (60csx or the 62s) without the emulator software. Part of the problem is that a USB port is not a COM port so you cannot set the correct port, no? It works fine with emulator software, but not without it. I am not sure if this means anything or not, but we are using laptops as our data collector running ArcPad.

Hi Nick, This would be dependent upon the Garmin GPS unit being set to output NMEA GPS sentences as ArcPad doesn't support Garmin's proprietary GPS format. Once connected and GPS on and running, open ArcPad and select GPS > GPS Preferences > GPS tab and run Find GPS utility (black binoculars) to search for the connected GPS. Please review the ArcPad Help for more information. Cheers, Denise Does this mean you can now connect Garmin to ArcPad running on a laptop using just an USB port with out needing special software or an actual serial port?

Does ArcPad 10x communicate with Garmin GPS via USB? We are running Arcpad10 on a new laptop with out a serial port & a new Garmin 62s, which also does not have a serial connector plug anymore. I read a post in this forum that indirectly hinted this is now possible, but cannot find anything saying for sure if it is true or not. I know the solution is for the virtual software to convert USB port to a virtual serial port. However, since serial ports now seem to be going the way of record players and VHS machines it would be nice for this to work in the native environment without the gimmicks. Thanks in advance, Tim
