I wonder if any ArcPad users are still out there. Anyway, I need to deploy a form with the ability for the user to take notes in French. How can I change the keyboard on the bottom toolbar in windowsmobile 6 from the English to the French alphabet?

Can I activate an applet from the ArcPad.APX? I have a data collection applet which is not used with a map. I can get a reference to the applet but cannot activate it. I copied the following VBS from the Studio Help and the first three lines work but not combination seems to open or activate the applet. Set objLoggerApplet = Application.Applets.Item (1) Set objTheForms = objLoggerApplet.Forms Application.MessageBox "The applet has " & objTheForms.Count & " forms", apInformation Application.Applets.Item(1).Run or Application.Applets.Item(1).Activate or objLoggerApplet.Activate

I'm still using ArcPad deployed on "rugged" PDAs and have uncountable hours invested in developing custom scripts. For example, I have developed scripts for geologic field mapping, drill hole logging, geophysical measurements, rock sampling, and many other basic tasks used by field geologists. If I just wanted to enter geolocated points into a database, I would use Epicollect which runs fine on my Android phone and is free. It is depressing that ESRI could care less about the aggregate time the user base has devoted to implementing their needs on this platform. Instead they have rolled out a couple of useless new products that we are supposed to embrace, develop new scripts for to do the same things we already do with ArcPad if that is even possible. The mousetrap I have is still superior to the "better mousetraps" some ESRI software developers, who have never set foot in the field, think we need. I can only imagine how long these toddlers will continue to "improve" their latest toys before they grow bored and start all over again. I would like to see an effort by ESRI to continue to improve ArcPad and adapt it to hardware platforms that cost a few hundred dollars. Tom Bell Stratamodel Inc

Hi All, I wonder if anyone knows how to troubleshoot a script error that reads: Error Source Unavailable Error Description Unavailable [Line:1 Column: 1] Source Text Unavailable I have gotten these over the years using ArcPad and it is usually some bad VBS or a problem in the XML in the .apl file. If I open either the vbs or apl in ArcPad studio, I can usually find the problem. This kind of error is usually fatal but not always. I keep getting this cryptic script error message which happens when I open a form. It doesn't prevent my use of the form but it is really annoying. Both the apl and vbs check out fine in ArcPad Studio. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this would be welcome Thanks Tom Bell

I am using ArcPad 10.0 on a Geneq SXPad. I have a simple map with one point and one polyline layer. When the GPS is active, I can add points. I cannot stream vertices to the polyline layer because the tool is greyed out. I have made the polyline layer editable. I have even created a new polyline shapefile and quickform in ArcPad, added it to the map and it cannot be added to either. I've run out of checkboxes to toggle and ideas. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Thanks.

I recently read a discussion on facebook requesting that ESRI create an ArcPad version that runs on the Android OS. Several ESRI employees associated with ArcPad development responded in one way or another. I was amazed or should I say dismayed by their contention that no one would want to use a phone as a data gathering platform because in general, they are not rugged devices. As a long time ArcPad and rugged PDA user, I would like to point out some of the realities of using so called rugged PDAs. First, the low end devices may be rugged while still in the box but in fact out there in the real world, they don't last as long as we expect. These devices are expensive ($1,000+) and expensive to fix. Second, though there are videos on the web were people drop them on the floor or throw them into swimming pools, most of us know better than to abuse them like this. The fact is, rugged PDAs aren't as necessary as many people think. I would like to be able to buy a cheap mobile device that isn't rugged and throw it away if it breaks or get it repaired for something less than 50% of the original purchase price. Low end android based tablets are getting cheap so why use a high priced rugged device? Maybe the only barrier to this strategy is ESRIs unrealistic assumptions about the needs of its user base.

Hanna, Thanks again for helping out. I have this extension installed on a Trimble Recon. I don't understand why it works on your GeoExplorer but not my Recon. Can you confirm that you get a message confirming the clock reset when you activate the tool. I have included some screen shots. The first one shows the time at 10:49, an hour later than the local time. The second shot shows the tool associated with the extension. After clicking it, no message box appears, the screen just goes back to the map and as you can see, the time is still set at 10:49 instead of the actual time which is 9:49. My spectrometer extention works but only after rewriting the DLL. I'm not sure what changes were made but it still will not display it's associated text boxes when any of its tools are called.

Hi Hannah, Thanks you for taking the time to help me. I should have said that I already toggled the delayed load to "false". I have looked at the extensions preferences file and confirmed that it is still set to false. The tool that is loaded with the extension is visible as well. When I click it with the GPS running, it does not reset the system clock. And yes, I did load the appropriate dll for my ARM processor based PDA. My recollection is that there was a dialog box that appeared when this tool was used either warning that the GPS was not turned on or that the system clock was successfully updated. Now no message appears on screen. The custom extension I am interested in reviving does not post any messages either and I know it should. I downloaded the time set extension from ESRI years ago and it performed flawlessly while installed on ArcPad 7.0.1. http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=12623 If you have time, perhaps you can download it to your mobile device and see if it will work for you. The programmer who wrote the extension for my gamma instrument is troubleshooting it now at some cost to my firm. I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks Tom

I recently migrated my projects from ArcPad 7.0.1 to ArcPad 10.0.4. I am coming to regret it. Among other problems, several of the extensions I have don't work in 10. For example, I have an extension that captures the date and time from the GPS and updates the system clock. This is really handy if my PDA reverts back to its build date sometime in 2008. Instead of entering the current time and date, I can use this tool from ArcPad to reset it. The real problem is with an extension I had developed to connect a gamma spectrometer to ArcPad that no longer works on 10. I see that most of the extensions that ship with ArcPad 10 are built for 10 but a notable exception is the HARN tables which dates from ArcPad 7.1. It is probably not a good sign for developers that ESRI had to rewrite all of its stock extensions for 10. If anyone knows how ArcPad has changed with regard to handling extensions, please reply to this post.

These devices are expensive ($1,000+) and expensive to fix. Unlike phones, you usually can't buy parts on eBay or even from the manufacturers so do it yourself repairs are normally out of the question. For example, a dealer or factory screen replacement for my Trimble Recons exceeds $600 per unit. I buy new NEC screens on eBay for about $25 and replace them myself in about 20 minutes. None of the other Recon components are available so when something like a CF slot goes dead (a common problem), the Recon is toast. Second, though there are videos on the web were people drop them on the floor or throw them into swimming pools, most of us know better than to abuse them like this. I bought one and am sending it back after three weeks of trying to make it live up to the glowing reviews it was getting from a bunch of paid websites. The first one was so bad, Magellan sent me a second one. It didn't work any better than the first one. Magellan must think the world is full of alpha testers so they sent out some fine sounding press releases to create buzz about the Pro10. That buzz may prove to be a swarm of angry consumers that come back to sting them when enough people buy this thing. If you like PDAs that lock up, hardware and firmware that doesn't work, buttons that take 5 lbs of pressure to activate, a screen that crowds the right side so bad that the scroll bars don't work, this is the device for you. Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 is not helping much here either. When something goes wrong (right after you boot for the first time), call their "help" line in the Philippines. Don't be surprised when the "engineers" tell you that Magellan doesn't have a model called the eXplorationist Pro 10. Don't worry when they give you the phone number of Ashtech for technical support. Ashtech is loving it because it gives them a chance to sell you their competing product in this market. Apparently the news hasn't reached Manila that Magellan and Ashtech parted ways long ago and they are direct competitors. I should have been suspicious when the press releases about this device came out in April but it was only available for purchase in September. Got to wonder if their undergrad development team was waiting till the last minute to turn in their student thesis. Magellan actually makes Trimble look good.

I am using ArcGIS v9.2 with the extension Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst and the latest patches and service packs. While I can still display raster images, I cannot use any of the tools in either extension or for that matter any operation that involves raster processing. For example, when I try to include a raster in ArcPad, I get a message that the raster processing failed. When I try to do raster algebra with any of the tools, I get an unspecified error message. If I try to use any of the interpolation functions (krige, nearest neighbor, etc), I get an unspecified error. Does anyone have any idea what can cause such a widespread failure of this basic GIS function?

I'm not sure exactly what you need. You can set the number of GPS sentences to average in your GPS Preferences tab. When the form opens, the averaging begins and if you try to close the form before it reaches the number you have specified you will get a warning message. When the form is closed, the averaged GPS is the position of the point. It then is available by querying that point. Or, you can get the northing and easting directly from the GPS. Here is a simple VBS code block to get the coordinates directly from the GPS. Note that the northing and easting are saved to a global variable that you can use elsewhere including insertion into a file, database record, form, etc. Dim dblX, dblY
If Application.GPS.IsOpen Then
dblX = GPS.X
dblY = GPS.Y
Application.UserProperties("LOCx")=dblX
Application.UserProperties("LOCy")= dblY
Else
dblX = map.pointerX
dblY = map.pointerY
End If
