Hi all, There are two ways to add data from a database to a map: I choose the button "Add Data", navigate to my SDE connection file, open it, and add my required table or view to the map. I navigate to File > "Add Data" > "Add Query Layer". Then I select a database connection, build my SQL query, and add my required table or view to the map. I had in mind that since version 10.3 of ArcGIS, both ways lead to the same result. But still, I can find several differences. Worst is this: I have a Oracle 12 view containing point objects and several additional attributes. Via "Add Data", I'm able to add this layer. But with "Add Query Layer" the same layer doesn't work. For only 5 points in my view, it takes about 15min to show them on the map; as soon as I open the respective table, ArcMap throws an error. Secondly, it doesn't seem to be possible to choose a project SDE file as a connection. Only SDE files stored in \Database Connections are available. I would absolutely prefer Query Layers with the possibility to modify the query with SQL. I couldn't find any documentation describing the differences. Does anybody know a documentation comparing "Add Data" vs. "Add Query Layer"? Or could anybody share his or her experiences with it? Thanks, Tobias

I've implemented PrintingTools in my JavaScript application to offer users the capability to export a map to a PNG file. It worked quite well for months. But suddenly, exported maps don't show map symbols anymore. Instead, the only thing visible is the default symbol delivered by my ArcGIS service. This is how it is supposed to be and how looks like in my app: And this is what I get in the png file: Background info: The symbol files (PNG) are stored on a different web server, not on the ArcGIS server machine. References to the symbol files are set with JavaScript, overriding the default symbol delivered by the map service. The symbol files location is accessible without restrictions for user's clients. This is obvious, because the app is working on the clients (except exporting, though). Also, I'm able to see the symbol if I navigate to the symbol file URL in a browser. The symbol files location is also accessible without restrictions from our ArcGIS server machine. This is required to make PrintingTools work. To test whether they are accessible, I navigate to the symbol file URL in a browser and can see the symbol. So: Port is open. But despite the symbols seem to be accessible, the symbol is omitted when exporting. I've looked at PrintingTools logs, but this error seems not to be logged. The file is just ignored. Any ideas or hints where to search next? Regards Tobias

Hi all, In my application, I use a map service with about 200 map layers. Users can manually toggle these map layer's visibility in my JavaScript app. My map service is published to ArcGIS for Server with ArcMap. All layers are added (and symbolised) to ArcMap manually. Initial data source is a folder containing these 200 MapInfo TAB files. These files are loaded to a File Geo Database with FME, and automatically updated every night. FME also detects new layers and includes them in my F-GDB. Now I would like to automate this process: 1. New layers should be added to my map service automatically (symbolisation should follow some rules). 2. Deleted layers should be removed from my map services automatically. What would be a good strategy to solve this? Any hints? Restriction: I'm not allowed to change anything in my source folder. I have to work with these MapInfo TAB files, I'm not allowed to move them to, let's say, an Enterprise Geo Database. Best regards Tobias

I’ve used SVG files as images; worked quite well, but I couldn’t make exporting work… Had to change back to PNG now.

Thanks, good hint. Now I didn't find how to only show 1 Map Layer (let's say with Layer Id 199) with ArcGISDynamicMapservice... How do I do that?

Hi all, In my application, I use a map service with about 200 map layers. Users can manually toggle these map layer's visibility. These map layers normally have between 1500 and 7000 objects. It takes a long time to load some of these layers (maybe a minute). Users respect that because of the amount of objects (although it would be great to speed it up...) But it's really strange that not all objects are being loaded. And even more strange is that for some layers it works. And the most strange thing is that it seems to work with Firefox, but not with Chrome. See screenshot: These map layer has 6987 objects. It only shows the objects north of Switzerland. My Map Service is defined to return max 7000 objects in ArcGIS for Server. Do I have to declare this option for my FeatureLayer in JavaScript as well (maxRecordCount)? Regards, Tobias

Ok, that's really helpful. Your hint about single path symbols is very important, thanks. My symbols are more complex. Do you know where I can find documentation about it? Google couldn't help me yet.

Hi all, I'm developing a web app based on ArcGIS for Javascript. My customer's problem requires using many different point symbols, some of them graphically quite complex. I use PictureMarkerSymbols to create my symbols. First I've used PNG's for my PictureMarkerSymbols. I'm not quite happy with the drawing quality, they look kind of pixelated. Now I'm thinking about changing to SVG. My first tests showed much clearer symbols. But drawback seems to be that export to PDF and PNG doesn't work anymore. Also, it seems to me that it takes more time to build the map, and I'm getting timeout errors now and then. Is anyone experienced with SVG's for PictureMarkerSymbols and knows about the drawbacks? Regards, Tobias

Hi everybody In IE (V11) the map order of layers is not identical with Firefox and Chrome. Is this a known issue? I tried to resolve it with Map.reorderLayer, but it doesn't have any impact. The layer order doesn't change, no matter how they are reordered. One layer is a feature layer with a line symbol and the other layer consists of image symbols. Maybe there is a problem with image symbol ? Regards, Tobias

Hi Is it possible to put some user interaction like toggle an object's visibility into a Info Window or Popup? In my map, I have a bunch of point objects (e.g. outlets). By clicking an outlet symbol, an info window opens up. This info window must contain a checkbox or similar to toggle the visibility of an area (e.g. catchment area of this outlet). See sketch. Any hints? Regards, Tobias

Hi This is my setup: Oracle DB 11g A view containing xy coordinates of start points and end points for lines ArcGIS for Desktop 10.3 ArcGIS for Server 10.3 ArcGIS API for JavaScript This is what I'm supposed to do: A map app, built with ArcGIS API for JavaScript, should show this lines. It's very important to know that these lines must be built directly out of the view; meaning, the map must only be the graphic representation of this view. What is the best strategy to achieve this? Build the lines with JavaScript? Possible, but could be very slow. Build the lines with ArcMap? I've only found a tool called "xy to line tool"; I guess this is only to create line objects and store them physically. Build the lines with Oracle, as part of the view? Then how? Any hints? Tobias
