I do realize that you can use the Smooth Line or Smooth Polyline tool in the Geoprocessing toolbox, but it would be very convenient to have a smooth function in the Modify Feature toolset, much like the one in the Advanced Editing toolbar in ArcMap. I've been using ArcGIS Pro 1.1.1 for editing raw GPS data lately, and for the most part, I love it. Cleaning up drainage and road lines from GPS capture with a Bing aerial basemap is much easier in Pro because the aerial layer is actually navigable and fast. I've never had that type of basemap performance in ArcMap. Redraws are painfully slow. In Pro, it's quick and easy, much like a Google Earth-type experience. I've got my Quick Access Toolbar all decked out, and editing features is quite streamlined. That is, until I need to smooth the drainage or road or site boundary I just aligned to the aerial. In ArcMap, this is easily accomplished with the Smooth tool on the Advanced Editing Toolbar. The Modify Features toolset is a loose analog to that, but there is a conspicuous absence when it comes to smoothing. The Geoprocessing tools create a new output every time the tool is run. I don't need that, I simply need to smooth the line or polygon that I've just edited. ArcMap Advanced Editing Toolbar: ArcGIS Pro Modify Features Tools: ArcGIS Pro Geoprocessing Tools: Am I not looking in the right place, or does this functionality not exist yet? If not, could you include it the next release, ESRI?? If it does exist, could someone point out where it lives? Thanks!

I find that I'm getting this error quite a bit. Mostly when working with Mosaic Datasets, but also with other geoprocessing tools. The data is stored on a network location. No one else is accessing the data. I'm not sure why there is a lock in place. In the past, I've been able to get around this by using the ArcPy command line. That works maybe 50% of the time. I just tested this by creating a new File GDB and then attempting to create a Mosaic Dataset within the GDB. The GDB had never touched, and still I get this error. Is this because I'm accessing a network drive? This is the same location that I work in when in ArcMap 10.1, and it works fine from there. Also, I've noticed that about half of the time, Mosaic Datasets aren't even visible from the "Add Data" window. Can anyone shed any light on the situation? Why are these GDBs locked? Adding vector data from file GDBs doesn't seem to be a problem, but mosaic datasets are very problematic. I've upgraded to ArcGIS Pro 1.1.1, and this is still happening. Thanks. Edit: It looks like the Create Mosaic Dataset tool gets as far as creating the AMD...CAT catalog file within the GDB before it fails.

Thanks, Nicola. That's a good idea. I'll try that and let you know if it works. However, I'd think if MS SQL Server Compact wasn't installed, ArcPad wouldn't be able to write to the AXF at all. This problem has been unpredictable and sporadic. I suppose the SQL Server Compact installation could be corrupt, however, leading to odd and inconsistent behavior... Thanks!

Hi Ingrid, When the user closes the map, and the day's data is lost. It is totally gone. As if it had never existed. There is nothing to check in, and when exported from ArcPad Studio to a shapefile, that data still isn't present. I've even opened the AXF in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express and I can see records and repair the underlying database, but the data is nowhere to be seen. Puzzling indeed. The data has been observed as missing before the AXF is even transferred from the unit. The two times this has happened the user closed the map, and then re-opened the map later. All, or practically all, of the data for that day was gone. The data was viewable on the screen and in the attribute table previously, but when the map was re-opened, it was no longer there. I have used the export to shapefile function with great success in the past, but this time it's a no go. It's almost as if the changes made and features created are being stored in volatile memory and are not saving back to the AXF in the device storage. When the program is closed that volatile memory (RAM) is dumped. That is just a theory, though, and it goes against my conception of how ArcPad works. I was always under the impression that GPS captures and form attributes were saved to the AXF immediately. Thanks for your input.

Hi Ingrid, I was wondering if this had something to do with what we are seeing. But the fact that the users continuously record data for long periods of time without closing map or letting the unit hibernate, makes me believe that the problem lies elsewhere. It is good to know of this limitation, however, and I'll make sure our field crews aren't shutting down the maps prematurely. Thanks.

Thanks, Rebecca. I forgot to add that I was on ArcPad 10.2. I edited the post to reflect that. As to your question, I don't believe any other data is being written outside of the forms. I'll look into it, though, and make sure. Perhaps I can add an auto-save function to make sure the data is being written to the device storage after every feature capture (I thought it did that by default, but I could be wrong).

We have several field crews out recording data using ArcPad 10.2 and Trimble 3B units with an AXF and custom forms. The forms were modified in ArcPad Studio, and differ mostly in formatting from the forms automatically generated from the geodatabase. The GDB does contain several domains that are used in the forms. We've also been using the Add XYZ applet found on the ArcScripts webpage. One unit in particular is giving us problems. Twice in the past two field sessions, the user collected data throughout the day, and then closed the map when heading out of the field. Upon returning to the hotel room to back up the data, they realized that all of the day's data was simply gone. Missing. The previous day's data was still there, but everything from that day ceased to exist. Throughout the day, the points, lines, and polygons recorded were visible on the map, so you'd think they were saved and quite safe, but evidently that was not the case. The first time this happened, all of the day's data was lost, except for the first point taken that day. The second time it happened, all data recorded that day was lost. Does anyone have any idea what may cause ArcPad to not retain saves to an AXF when closing the map? As I understand it, changes to the AXF should be saved automatically once the forms are "OK'd" and exited from. The fact that this has only happened on one unit, makes me wonder if it is a hardware problem, but if data corruption is happening on a hardware level, that doesn't explain why only select data from one day at a time is being lost. My second thought is that perhaps the installation of ArcPad itself if corrupt. I'll post with any solutions or insights I come up with once I have the unit in hand, and can perform tests on it myself. Until then, I welcome any experience, workarounds, explanations, or thoughts concerning what may be happening here. Thanks.

Hi Derek, Did you ever find any solutions to your problem? One of our Juno units has been experiencing data loss as well. It's very similar to what you described. Field crews are out all day collecting points, lines, and polygons for an archaeological survey, and then occasionally, when they close the map, *poof*. The entire day of data is simply gone. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the bug mentioned above or not. I'll have the unit in my hands in a few days, and will try to reproduce the behavior.

Hi Missy, Since you checked out your data as a shapefile, you will not be able to check it back in. You can, however, manually copy the shapefile from your GPS unit to your computer and then open the shapefile in ArcMap. Like Ben has said, if you'd like to use the Check-in function, then you'll need to check out your data as an editable AXF layer. You will then be able to choose that AXF file during the check-in process. Shapefiles are not supported for check-in, however in ArcPad 10.

I'm having the same problem. Pro crashes every time I attempt to open it, so I cannot even get to the offline setting. If I run as an administrator, then the program starts, but when I log in with my credentials, I get the "some other device" message. I'm effectively locked out completely. Did you get any information about the cause of the issue, or a solution?
