Update: without needing to customize the template code, this functionality is possible to achieve using some of the templates in the classic story maps (as opposed to the new ArcGIS StoryMaps). I don't understand why the newer templates don't include this functionality!

Thank you very much for the prompt reply, Owen. Unfortunately that method looks far too complex for me. It's a shame there isn't a simpler way to add this functionality to a story map.

Hello, I have created a story map using a 'map series' template. (I am prepared to change the template if it will enable me to achieve what I am trying to achieve.) My story map contains a web map that features a few point locations. I want viewers to click on a point and for the story map to jump to the relevant section in the story map that contains information about that point location. I cannot find any information online on how to do this. Please note I do not want to include a link in the pop-up. I know how to do that and that is not what I am trying to achieve. I want it to be a one-step process for the viewer where they click once on the point and it immediately shows the information associated with that point in the story map. Some example story maps that have this feature are: Geography Bee: A Global Gallery of Pollinators https://abcbirds.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=2a9bfc38d903490c9ca05a1adefd2aed Thank you very much. Sarah

I have a similar problem and I have a shapefile that contains numerous overlapping features. In ArcMap I was able to use the 'sort' function to order all of the features in my shapefile by area/size so that the largest polygons were drawn on the bottom and the smallest polygons were drawn on top. When I bring the shapefile into ArcGIS Online, it maintains the order of the features in the attribute table, but it applies an arbitrary drawing order to those features - so ArcGIS Online is not drawing features according to the order they appear in the attribute table like ArcMap does. Additionally, it does not appear possible to use symbol level drawing in ArcGIS Online, which in ArcMap I had been using as an additional step to control the display of features.

Hi Egge-Jan, Thank you for your reply, that's helpful. So if I've understood you correctly, I should use ArcGIS Pro to compile data, perform spatial analyses, and publish my map, then I should use ArcGIS Online to add interactive features to my map and to share it with others. That seems clear now - thank you. Sarah

I am an ArcGIS for Desktop user who is trying to come up to speed with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. I want to use an ArcGIS for Personal Use license to create maps of a personal (non-commercial) nature and share the maps with non-users of ArcGIS. In order to achieve this I know I need to create a web map, however I am unsure whether I should create a map in ArcGIS Pro and use ArcGIS Online to share the map, or whether I should create and share the map using ArcGIS Online only. I am struggling to find information on the key differences in functionality for web map creation between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. For those that are experienced in web map creation, do you create and share your maps using ArcGIS Online only, or do you create your maps in ArcGIS Pro and use ArcGIS Online to share the map?

Thank you for the suggestion, Joe, it's much appreciated. I would have used this work-around had Kory not come up with a more optimal solution.

Hello, I have a polygon feature layer containing approx. 2000 polygons. Hundreds of the polygons reside within other polygons and I want to use the smaller polygons to erase areas from the larger polygons. The erase tool is perfect for this, but I first need to create a separate layer of the smaller polygons to be used as the 'erase feature' in the erase tool. Unfortunately I am struggling to find a way to select the polygons that reside within other polygons because all of the polygons are from the same feature layer. Consequently, 'select by location' does not work as it requires separate input and target layers, and 'select by attributes' does not work because there are no defining attributes that distinguish between the polygons (e.g. selecting by size/area is not an option as the size range of the polygons I want to select overlaps considerably with the size of the polygons that I don't want to select). Is there a way to perform a spatial selection that selects features that are completely contained within other features when all features are within the same feature layer? (I am using ArcMap 10.6.1 and I have virtually no programming knowledge. Please note I am aware that a similar question was asked at https://community.esri.com/thread/108935-how-to-detect-polygon-within-a-polygon-in-the-same-layer but the replies are not helpful in my case.) I am grateful for any suggestions. Thank you very much. Sarah
