I think this happens with large datasets... I've been able to get around this error by validating the topology incrementally using the 'Validate Topology at Current Extent' tool (on the topology toolbar) at a few different locations/extents

ps I'm uploading/updating/publishing services via service definitions. Since .sd files only support the basic item description, the metadata carried with the sd when it is published is also truncated.

I haven't done anything with this, but there are some REST operations that may be useful: ArcGIS REST API and a number of tools on github, e.g. : Esri/ago-tools · GitHub or this gateway to a variety of tools: Tools · Esri/ago-admin-wiki Wiki · GitHub

I noticed the new Metadata feature on AGOL, thanks ESRI!! While it is great that we can manually upload ArcGIS formatted .xml metadata... Has anyone had success uploading an XML through REST/python script to an AGOL hosted service? Based on my reading of the REST API documentation, it should be possible with an update item operation. I've been attempting this for a while without any luck. Any suggestions? My most recent variation (using requests): def uploadMeta():
baseURL= agol.http+'/content/users/{}/items/{}/update'.format(agol.username, agol.itemID)
metaUp = {"file": open(updatedXML, 'rb')}
updatemetaurl = baseURL + "?f=json"+\
"&file=metadata.xml"+"&overwrite=true&token="+agol.token
responseMeta = requests.post(updatemetaurl, files=metaUp, proxies=proxyDict) this returns a <Response[200]> and response text:{u'id': u'4b99244d8df34ffba9c7ddf1dc20ea88', u'success': True} BUT the metadata isn't updated. I can use the AGOL UI to manually update the metadata, but I need a way to automate. Any help would be great appreciated. the updatemetaurl I'm using here ends up looking like this: http://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/users/sm970mn/items/4b99244d8df34ffba9c7ddf1dc20ea88/update?f=json&file=metadata.xml&overwrite=true&token=q2IMhjG1YtSQ9csq...

Hi everyone, When people connect to my organization's AGOL hosted services via a GIS Server connection in ArcMap (e.g. http://services1.arcgis.com/[Group ID #]/ArcGIS/rest/services , the 'Item Description' returns the error message 'The item's XML contains errors.' BUT, the metadata/item details display fine when viewed via AGOL, ArcMap's Add Data AGOL search, and through the 'My Hosted Services' connection. Any ideas? thanks in advance, Mike ps: Several of ESRI's services seem to have this same 'Item Description' problem (but some of theirs work) when accessed via a server connection in ArcMap:

thanks for this answer! Note: with 10.3 you'll need to use lat_of_origin_regex = "latitude_of_origin',(\d+\.?\d*)" with lowercases also, you can also use the factoryCode in the arcpy.SpatialReference()

I have a similar situation. I can configure the normal map viewer popup the way I want it, and the editor pop up that comes up while creating features too...but when the user just selects the feature while the edit sidebar is active they can see the attributes that I don't want them to see. Any suggestions? We want to collect user contact info but not let it be visible.

Hi Everyone, Does anyone have suggestions for how to set Pro (e.g. its cache settings) so changes are immediately visible in the display and attributes table? I currently have issues with things like the 'highlight' from selected features not getting refreshed-off the display when they're unselected. I also recently had an issue where my new values for a calculate field wouldn't show up in the attribute table (but when I exported the features the new values were in the new shapefile). I've experienced these issues with both the 'Keep the cache between sessions. Invalidate the cache when data is updated' and the ' and the 'Don't cache any data locally' options selected. thanks, Mike

That's it (I'm a complete newbie to working with the REST API)! Thanks for the quick reply! I started to piece it together late yesterday when I came across these suggested edits for working with proxies in another feature service script on github. I ended up using pacparser on my office's wpad to determine my server ip and port and hardcoded them os.environ['http_proxy'] = "http://" + pxy_user + ":" + pxy_pass + "@" + pxy_srvr + ":" + pxy_port thanks again!

I'm trying to use Trill's script. It works when I monitor the http traffic with Fiddler, but fails with urllib2.URLError: urlopen error 10061 'no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it' when I run the script without Fiddler open. I believe Fiddler makes it work because it is essentially acting as a proxy while it is open. Simply running SETX https_proxy http://user:pw@serverIP:port in the command prompt doesn't seem to cut it for me. Any suggestions? thanks, Mike *My office uses a wpad.dat for the proxy if that matters

I've had/have similar issues, so please post your solution if you have one. In the past, I've had a cache with a small patch of missing tiles at Level 18 (all the rest cached fine). I tried creating the empty tiles, but that didn't doing anything. So then I tried recreating all tiles and that started to make whole in the cache bigger. Haha... as I was typing this I think I just stumbled across something that worked for me (For a situation where I was having an issue at the largest scale, level 19). I added another cache level (level 20 at 1:564) and then cached with an AOI around the area of missing tiles and set it to cache missing tiles for levels 20, 19 and 18. Hope that helps...Sounds like your missing tile situation is a little more complicated though. Have you double-checked the MinPS and MaxPS values of you mosaic and the max cell size set with your service properties? A mismatch with these can lead to irregular areas of missing cache. -Mike

Glad you fixed your issue. For those that may stumble across this thread: When my status.gdb has gotten corrupt, I've had luck deleting the Status.gdb for the service and then running the cache status tool (It''l generate a new one which should work/ be accurate).

Thanks, Jamie, for the suggestion. I may give it a try in a bit... I was kinda hoping there'd be a way to do it without moving the cache around. I've been experimenting with a different (much smaller) cached image service. It seems like I may be able to just go through windows explorer, delete the service's Status.gdb folder in the cache directory, and then trick ArcGIS Server into rebuilding the status gdb from scratch with the Manage Map Server Cache Status. This worked on the test service's cache status...it'll be a day or two until I know if this works on the real deal.

Hi everyone, I'm working with 10.1 sp 1 Server updating a cached image service. I recently used Manage Cache Tiles to delete some cache and then attempted to run Manage Map Server Cache Status on it. Doing so is giving me 'Error 001457: Could not initialize status GDB'. The Help is telling me to do the same thing that was throwing this error: rung Manage Map Server Cache Status with it set to Rebuild Cache Status. Any tips or suggestions for how to deal with this?...aside from creating a new service and then importing the existing cache into the new service? thanks, Mike

Perhaps you weren't setting the 'Build cache automatically when the service is published' option on the Caching tab of the Service Editor during publishing.
