I am interesting in the perpendicular distance between a pt and a line and it seems that based on the link you sent (which makes intuitive sense!), the shortest distance between a pt and a line is necessarily perpendicular. But you suggested that the shortest distance between a pt and a line is not necessarily perpendicular. Can you explain? Thanks for your help! Shawn

Dan, Great method described above. Is there any way to get the 90 degree distance between points and lines? Near outputs the angle and instead of giving me the distance to nearest line segment, I would like perpendicular distance to line segment. Any thoughts? Thanks! Shawn

Hi Mauro, Not a simple question...I have been working on this as well. So far, I am using Geospatial Modelling Environment's (spatialecology.com) extractedge function to get a polyline for the raster edge. You can then work with this polyline to make polygons or points. You can probably also use the contour function to get what you want. Keep me posted if you find a better solution. Shawn

Hi all, I would like to generate a histogram of raster values per polygon for a layer with 1872 polygons with unique ids. It seems like zonal histogram should work but it is not. My raster data are floating but I have made them integer. I have positive and negative values for my raster cells. My polygon layer id tag defines the unique zones over which I would like to summarize. The tool seems to work fine and I get the green check mark suggesting that it has worked but it does not generate any output table. Has anybody used Zonal Histogram and run into similar problems? Or can anybody suggest another way to get a frequency distribution of raster values per polygon? Thanks!
