Hi: I think this is similar to a problem I posted in the cartography forum. The suggestion was to try the Sector Analysis tools. I think it may require getting the stream bearing. Steve Aalbers

Hi all: There is likely another method to perfor this task this already so I appreciate any help or ideas offered. I am often asked to find points at a certain distance upstream from a surface water intake. Rather than look at each buffer around each intake manually, I am looking for a method to generate a semicircle of a known radius with its center at the intake and, once generated, align the semicircle's perpendicular radius to the upstream direction in the NHD flowlines. Then a simple select by location can be used. Right now, I use a set buffer size on the intake points which gives me a conservative distance on the stream. But, I end up looking at each buffer individually so I can identify if the outfall is upstream or downstream. So far this is the method I have explored: 1) generate the buffer around the intake, 2) use the Split Tool to generate four quadrants, 3) delete the bottom half of the semicircle, manually rotate the semicircle tothe upstream direction. I tend to look at upwards of 200 intakes; a simpler or automated method would be great! I have attached a JPG image with my simplified approach.

Thanks for the responses. It must be my antiquated machine being fussy. Today it started working again...

After exhausting my ideas I need advice. I am using ArcInfo 10.1 (with a concurrent license over a network). I add a shapefile to my project which needs some attribute editing. I start the Editor and open the Attributes window. But the window is blank except for two box lines. I have tried the same method on two other machines (both with stand alone licenses) with the same results. I uninstalled and reinstalled ArcGIS 10.1 but the results remain the same. I have tried the attributes editor from both a shapefile and and a geodatabase feature class; same results. I am baffled. Any else experiencing this? I have attached an example. Help!

I have an MXD that exhibits an odd behavior. I created and save a map document (no items are selected) and closed the document. The next time I opened the MXD the legend, scale bar, scale text, and north arrow appear as selected. I clear the selections, save the document again and close it. The next time I open it up the same items are selected again. Thinking something was corrupted, I rebuilt the MXD from scratch and the same thing happens again. I uninstalled ArcGIS10 and reinstalled (with SP3) and the same issue continues to happen. Is anyone else experiencing this anomaly?
