I have a very large dataset of property addresses that I subscribe to. The problem is, the way the data is currently sorted in excel itcannot be geocoded. The problem is, in the database, it stores the address in a single cell. For instance "123 main street Denton TX 76205", that is a single cell in the column. Is there a way, either through Excel Macro within ArcGIS or some other method, to quickly go through the database and break apart each of the addresses into additional fields for each entry? Such as: "Address" 123 Main Street "City" Denton "State" TX "ZIP" 76205 I will need to break it apart in this manner to geocode the data.

The Upper function was utilized, although the original image does not reflect this. I verified there are no trailing/leading spaces as well. As shown here. I pasted the formula into the original column. You stated I can convert the table and work with it in ArcGIS, how do I go about doing that? Also is there a way in excel to see precisely the type of data stored in a column (float, double, text etc) Thanks

I have a shapefile of subdivisions. There is a separate excel file that contains the average year built for the subdivision. I am attempting to join them based on their common attribute, the subdivision name. The problem is once I do so, it results in null values. I thought it was perhaps because the shapefile had the string stored in caps, and in excel it was in proper form. I converted the excel column into caps lock as well and still no luck. Where might one find crime data at the census tract or block level? I am looking for data to join to an existing census tract or block shape file. I am looking for crime data in North Texas, specifically DFW (Dallas, Fortworth & Denton counties). I tried the usual places such as American Fact Finder 2 , but no luck. Here is an example of what I am going for; however, it is for a county in San Antonio and I am not sure where the author found the data (no mention in metadata). Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone. I have an additional question, but not related terms. For the code in this script it renames a legend element on the map. My question is what purpose does the [0] serve in making the code work/ what purpose does it serve? Please see image below for a clear picture of the issue.

Learning ArcPy, just trying to familiarize myself with the terms. In the below image I believe I have identified everything correctly, except what "lyr" represents. The icon ArcGIS displays is a purple note stack. I am not sure what the term for this is. For example the term "For" is a statement, I believe, so what is the term for Lyr? Here is another example

Thanks again, pardon my ignorance but I am new to all of this. I extracted all the contents from the 217 build to a folder. Do I just remove the "pythonwin" folder and put it in the C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0\Lib\site-packages directory? If so, how do I run pythonwin, I do not see an executable in the "pythonwin" folder. Here is the contents unzipped

Samantha, To be clear, you don't actually need PythonWin to do python scripting, it is just a nice Windows based Integrated Development Environment (IDE). PythonWin is not installed by default when you install ArcGIS but should be included on the Install disc for manual install. If that is not available, then you can d/l the apropriate version from Sourceforge.net. Once it is installed make a shortcut to the executable: C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0\Lib\site-packages\pythonwin\Pythonwin.exe Thanks for the clarification. As you will see in the screenshot below, there is no subfolder for "pythonwin" in C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0\Lib\site-packages\. Therefore I will go to your next step downloading it from sourceforge.net. See image below When downloading it from sourceforge, do I just select the latest built, 217 in this case, and download it? Do I have to worry about any compatibility issues with ArcGIS 10 2.6 python? Here is a picture of the pythonwin version I was about to download Thanks for your help 🙂

I am using ArcGIS 10. I am beginning some tutorials to learn Arcpy. The ArcGIS 10 install already installed python26 file directory (as shown in the screen shot below). In my case C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0\Lib\site-packages\ does not contain a pythonwin subfolder nor an executable for it.

In ArcGIS 10 ESRI has changed the language of the items contained within the select by location spatial selections drop down. It is hard for me to read because it is so verbose. As seen in the image below. In the older versions of Arc GIS the drop down was much easier to read. For example: intersect, are within a distance of, completely contain, are completely within, have their center in... etc. Is there a way to get this simpler wording back? If this question is not clear, please ask for clarification thanks
