This works just fine IF layers are uniquely named. It would make sense to me to incorporate this all into the API so we don't all have to write out error trapping for dup names. thank you as always, ryan

Before I start trying to write a bunch of code... has anyone figured out how to really determine whether a layer is visible or not in a map? For example, visible (checked) layers within a group layer that is not visible (unchecked) are not truly visible in an MXD. for lyr in lyrList: return lyr.visible Is there any way to determine a relationship between a layer and it's parent group it resides in? The point of this is so we can give a report to the cartography dept and the report will tell them which layers were used, that were truly visible, not just "checked." They make their maps from a list of data sources and layer files, not necessarily the MXD. Thanks, Ryan

My error happens using arcpy.SelectLayerByLocation_management(). My whole script works great as a stand alone, but fails when running as a REST service. However, I cannot get ArcServer to populate Documents.Open(filename) - it populates this as None. ??? Solution: Have to add arcgissoc user to DCOM config on the arcgis server. Allow permissions to allow local/remote launch, local/remote activation, and local/remote access permission. Ryan

My script calls Microsoft Word (win32com.client.Dispatch("Word.Application")) but fails. I can run the script as myself and on the same server ArcGIS server is using, which tells me Word is on the server. But, when I run the script from the REST endpoint, I believe I get a permissions problem. Error below. I believe permissions have been set properly for the soc/som user to access these libraries. COM issue? I have been working on a script to fit dynamic legends on the second page of a pdf. However, the legend seems to place incorrectly when I run the code. I was writing some functions to deal with each size template... but am wondering if this is a bug or I am just using this code incorrectly. In my script I am deleting all var's at the end and this still happens. I stripped it down and this behavior also exists in "CURRENT" as well. Copy/paste a few times in in a row in the arcpy window and you'll see what I mean. The legend's placement and columns toggle back and forth. Thanks for the tip... and yes, they still are smaller just keeping them as .jpg (they are the ame size as the .jp2's would be). So, I'll have the mobile folks test this out and see how it goes.

I am using PIL to convert .jpg's to .jp2's (for cache) for our mobile devices. I have not seen anything that says PIL supports JPEG2000... however, my script seems to work... the file sizes are smaller, and they show up more clear on the mobile devices (using ArcPad). The issue is that only some of the cache scales are viewed without error on the mobile device, and I am wondering if I can use the code the way I am, or if I am essentially running into issues since PIL does not "support" JPEG2000. Anyone have any experience with this? Is there a better way to convert to .jp2, preferably with Python? ok, an answer and something that doesn't need some crazy function... Having a tough time finding an easy answer to this. We have Report Lab, but haven't had much success getting at this piece. Seems like it should be very easy... I am appending multiple PDFs and am writing out a TOC for a cover page, but need the number of pages in each PDF I am appending. Any thoughts? thank you, Ryan

I have the same problem... though I have had it in SP1 too. Our dev and production servers are in a virtual env, though our production server (SOM) uses SOCs on two different virtual servers. I can successfully publish a service to dev and it shows up as a REST service after clearing the cache. Not the case in the production env... as it takes sometimes several hours (or I have to restart the SOC/SOM... not a good solution).

I couldn't replicate this issue... are you sure you have layer descriptions (just checking)? Obviously all of you layers support descriptions, or you'd be getting "Description N/A" somewhere...
