Thanks Steve, I have played around a bit with exporting "city engine" web scenes (with minimal success), but thought that might be a way to do it, but the file types are really limiting and needing to clip data and dems down was problematic. I was hoping to be able to publish city engine scenes out of arc pro, like you can in arc scene, not sure if that is coming or not, and publishing to agol webscene does not allow for 3d marker symbols. anyway, thanks for the response

Hey all, I'm trying to figure out a way to get realistic looking 3d trees into web scenes to view in agol "scenes". I don't have access to city engine, but to have arcgis pro v1.2 and arcgis desktop suite 10.4. I was hoping to be able to publish 3d marker feature services to represent trees in forestry visualizations. something like this. I've been successful in the desktop software, but cannot seem to figure out how to get a feature service or some other method to make this sort of scene possible in the web scene viewer. Anybody have any success getting 3d trees into the agol scene viewer? Here's a video link for a scene i did in Pro and sort of what i'm hoping for in a web scene. I know 3d markers are not supported in feature services currently, so has anyone figured out a workflow to display this sort of information in the web scene format? Currently I have lidar derived points with height attributes i have been using to symbolize with 3d marker trees, both from the esri 3d tree library and marker symbols i have made in sketch up as well. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers & Happy Mapping! Russ

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I think it ended up being a mix of user profile issues, and the msxml4 file issue. My wife's profile on our machine would not correctly load the software, but i was able to under my profile even though they are both admin..... strange, anyway, glad i did not have to deal with the whole registry key editing route. Very appreciative of all the suggestions though. Thanks again, and happy Gis'ing.. Cheers Russ

Hey all, I'm having trouble with a school install of arc gis desktop 10.3.1. Getting almost all the way through the install then getting an install error 1935 below. Had ArcGIS 10.2 running fine but school license ran out. Got an updated license to 10.3. I'm running windows 7 home premium. Hoping not to have to mess with registry key stuff. any help would be great. Am I missing something simple?

Hey matthew, You might try adding an "s" to the http part of the url..... ie https://yourserver.com/arcgis/services to enable a secure server connection?

So, i'm using a combination of Arcgis 10.2, arcglobe and AGX to create forestry visualizations, and am curious if it is possible to use a height field to set the height of the 3D (tree) marker symbols in Globe and then export that to an lpk for AGX consumption? I have lidar derived (top points) for the tree tips that i have been using to put the 3d marker trees into height bins for the symbology, but i would like to just use the actual heights of the trees from the data to set the globe real world heights. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

Hey Mark, I tried again using the method you showed in the video, but still cannot seem to get it to display properlyin arcglobe. Used a png photo with alpha channel transparency, unchecked face front box on both symbols. Flipped photos to seemingly the proper positions using the edit symbology dialog rotated so that they seemed to be crossing based on the xyz axis in the 3d view in the symbol settings, but it only shows one of the two planes for the symbols in the globe...... wierd..... must be doing something wrong, but the sketchup method seemed to work great as well, as long as the models are light enough to look at large forested areas..... still working on that testing.... cheers Russ

Hey Mark, Thanks a bunch for the response and the impromptu video, that's great! Yeah i have been playing around with this for awhile trying to get it figured out. Essentially been using the exact method you mentioned to set the 3d properties in ArcGlobe and create layer packages for use in ArcGis desktop for presentations and 3d visualizations. It's pretty awesome. I did try that same method you mentioned trying to create the 2 plane symbol with my photo but could not get it to work for some reason, i might have to revisit that method as well. The method Ben suggested worked great as well, i was able to create a simple 2 plane model and use the photo with alpha channel to texturize the faces and it turned out pretty well. which version do you think would be lighter for large areas? I'm looking to do landscape forestry visualizations , up to several hundred thousand trees. I"ll play around with it and see what works best. Thanks for the help from both of you!

Hey Ben, Thanks for the response! I appreciate the info. I have scoured the 3d warehouse for something that would work and have found nothing to fit my need. The stuff that has been close, is generally to complex to use for large scale visualizations. I am hoping to use this over relatively big areas so i need a simple model. I have done a lot of playing around with this and have had pretty good luck with making my own 2d (Front facing) marker symbols, they look really good from oblique angles but they start to get funny when doing fly over type scenarios where they always "face front" and you don't get a down facing perspective of the trees. So, follow up question is it relatively easy in sketchup to take the tree photo i have, create a two or three plane model and attach the photo i have to to the planes and save it as a collada file (.dae) I have tried this in adobe photoshop and cannot quite get it to work.. If seems like it should be a simple task, but i'm no expert with photoshop, and have never used sketch up. Here's some example of my dilemma below They look pretty good looking from oblique angles........ But get funky when flying overhead sometimes..... Anyway, any tips for sketch-up or photoshop to get this done would be greatly appreciated, thanks for the info. Cheers Russ

Does anyone know how to either edit existing 3d trees available in the 3d trees style set, or create my own 3d tree models to use in arcglobe and or arcgis explorer? I am using arcgis 10.2, and arcgis explorer build 2500 to do forestry visualizations, and none of the tree models are realistic for the tree types i want to visualize. I have several photos with alpha channel transparencies i would like to use to create the tree models but cannot seem to figure out the process for creating them. I have access to adobe CS5.5, autocad civil 3d 2012, and could probably load other freeware if there is a good method for creating these models. I just really want a simple 2 or 3 plane tree model with material draping from the photos i have. any help on preferred software, process and file type ect that will work for making the marker symbol similar to below:

Hey DH, I've been trying pretty hard to accomplish the same thing. Evidently, Adobe previously had the capability to directly import the wrl. files which are the direct output of , export to 3d from arcscene. Unfortunately with the new adobe pro they have dropped that functionality, and now it seems the only file type that is functional with 3d pdf's is ".u3d". I have also been playing with this and have found that "Meshlab" freeware will import the .wrl files pretty successfully and will also export to the u3d format. The problem i have not figured out yet is: when the .wrl file is imported to meshlab it seems to display well and the textures (i have played with lidar hillshades and aerial imagery draped on lidar dems), but when you export the model from meshlab to u3d, i cannot get it to keep the textures, i end up with a mesh surface without the surface textures. ;-( Still working on this. I have successfully added these (untextured) output files into a pdf, and the functionality seems to work for 3d viewing. hope that moves you along a little. cheers Russ
