You absolutely can! I can't speak for the general Javascript API as I've been using the ArcGIS Extension for the Google Maps API in combination with the Google Maps API. However, I can say that the Google Maps API will allow you to add a KML / KMZ overlay without any ESRI tools or API usage. You would just need to provide the URL for the KML when creating a new overlay. If you rather pull your KML/KMZ from the ArcGIS Server on a more dynamic basis then you will need to also utilize the extension api, but, the plus side is that you can also do far more than what the Google Maps API allows for on its own. I'm sure other folks have better experience with the standard ArcGIS API for Javascript, but my guess is that the two probably have feature parity with one another. Hope that helps!

As a follow-up, I have heard nothing on the front of using the ArcGIS Javascript API and ArcGIS Server to generate and deliver server-side heat/density maps. However, thanks to Patrick Wied and inspiration from his client-side Javascript library, I was able to put together a demo of client-side heat map generation here. Basically, this mash-up creates a colorized image using the <canvas> tag and then applies it as a GGroundOverlay (Google Maps API v2) to a Google Map. Currently it only supports non-IE browsers, but I am working on integrating excanvas.js to support IE 7 and 8.

Hi there, I'm very interested in learning how to generate heatmaps utilizing the ArcGIS API, particularly in conjunction with Google Maps. I've done some searching and the only relevant thread that I found was here, yet there is no real discussion of implementation, usage, etc... From what I've read, both the Flex and Silverlight APIs have methods that can be used to generate heatmaps and I was wondering if the Javascript or Google Extension APIs would be receiving equivalent method calls in the near future or if there is a work-around that I am unaware of. I'm still new to the Google Extension API and mapping in general, so please forgive my ignorance if there's anything that I've said should be blindingly obvious. Thanks!

Hi Jorge, Were you able to implement a heatmap using the javascript api and the com.esri.ps.atl.rr.heatmap library? I'm interested in learning how to do this with the Google Extension API without resorting to the heatmapapi.com approach. Any insight as to how you implemented your solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jorge!
