Since at least 2010 I've been using VB.net on my ArcObject software with the appropriate version of Visual Studio. The installation of the ESRI SDK would allow me to recompile existing projects and open new projects in the latest supported version of Visual Studio. I've recently upgraded my IDE support to VS 2017; installed the required version of the ESRI SDK and there is no template or evidence of one that supports a new VS.net ArcObjects project nor an option to install ESRI licensing. I think I found the answer. I just didn't search hard enough to find where to download the right SDK for VS 2017. I haven't done it yet but everything should work as before.

All right, I got it. After doing a bit more searching I found the answer tucked away in several other questions with similar or the same issue. Seems the entire output location must be free of blanks. The failure mode is a rather inelegant way of letting one know. I added another check to my input textbox to make sure I don't forget and browse to a location that has an embedded blank.

I recently updated to ArcMap 10.5.1 and I am trying to run a simple Extract by Mask tool that extracted a piece of a grid raster using a circular Shape file. I get an error that leads nowhere. I seems like I've overlooked some setting. I do have the Spatial Analyst extension selected. I figured that's all one needed. I've attached a screen shot of the output of running the tool. Does anyone have any idea of what I need to do?

Thanks Mody. I already had the following in before any calls to ArcObjects: .. If Not RuntimeManager.Bind(ProductCode.Desktop) Then MessageBox.Show("Could not bind to Desktop") End If I do not get the message box. The software runs until the first call to an ArcObject after this "If" statement then I get the Initialization-error box? A bit more info might help: The ArcObjects call routine that produces the initialization error window and no exception is: Try pBaseDEMFac = New RasterWorkspaceFactory pBaseDEMRW = pBaseDEMFac.OpenFromFile(System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(strBaseDEM), 0) pBaseDEMDataset3 = pBaseDEMRW.OpenRasterDataset(System.IO.Path.GetFileName(strBaseDEM)) ' Got it open so write it to registry... My.Computer.Registry.SetValue("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Civil War\Hidden Height", "BaseRaster", strBaseDEM) Catch ex As Exception If (MessageBox.Show("Unable to open Input Base DEM raster. Need additional help?", "Hidden Height", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo, MessageBoxIcon.Error)) = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Yes Then frmDiaExtraHelp.rtfExtraHelp.Text = strOpenError frmDiaExtraHelp.ShowDialog() End If End Try When I skip around the above Try to the next ArcObject I do get an exception but no initialization error box: Try pSFFactory = New ShapefileWorkspaceFactory 'strShapeDir = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(strShape) pSFFeatureWorkspace = pSFFactory.OpenFromFile(System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(strShape), 0) strTestDir = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(strShape) pShapeFile = pSFFeatureWorkspace.OpenFeatureClass(System.IO.Path.GetFileName(strShape)) Catch ex As Exception If (MessageBox.Show("Unable to open Input observation points Shapefile. Need additional help?", "Hidden Height", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo, MessageBoxIcon.Error)) = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Yes Then frmDiaExtraHelp.rtfExtraHelp.Text = strOpenError frmDiaExtraHelp.ShowDialog() End If Exit Sub End Try I used model builder to test a raster copy tool from the toolbox and that worked just fine. So, I'm obviously missing something in converting the VB software since it worked just fine in my old versions of both Visual Studio and ArcMap. Took me a few days but I finally figured out what the simple "Initialization Error" windows was trying to tell me. When I added licence checking there was a second screen that I neglected to add a check mark indicating my selection of a basic, standard or advanced (as I remember) application. I clicked on advanced and it took off executing several arobjects before failing on a geoprocessing call of Extract raster by mask. I'll work on that now..

I'm converting the VB program from Visual Studio 2008 to VS 2013 and from ArcMap 10.0 to 10.5. I got the program to compile clean but get the "Initialziation Error" when attempt to run. I'm running Windows 10 and dotnet 4.5 is specified.

Thanks. I won't have access to the machine again until Tuesday. I'll check then and let you know.

Not resolved yet... I've about given up on that machine... What specifically are you thinking might be wrong with the account settings...? Since ArcMAP and ArcCatalogue R10 run fine on the machine I didn't think there'd be any issue?

Thanks. No, it's a desktop application and a 32-bit OS on the Dell. Somehow I missed CCPoston posting. I'll take a look at what the license Administrator sees... it might be that simple. Thanks.

Yes, it is a 32 bit machine running Windows 7. According to the ESRI migration doc the target machine should be set as "x86". Thanks for the thought.

Didn't report a specific problem... It just reported that execution was stopped (right after the splash screen went away and before the main window came up). Other than being a desktop Dell... the other machines are either HP laptops and desktops there are no obvious differences. ArcMAP R10 comes up and runs fine on it... At first I suspected it was a license checking problem; but when I run the old R9.3 version on the same Dell machine it doesn't even display the splash screen just tells me that execution stopped and it's checking for a solution. I've considered what might be different, memory, etc. but all appears to be consistent with requirements to run an ArcObject standalone routine?

I supplied a standalone VB.NET program to my department that was developed and ran fine on Desktop R9.3. Recently everyone migrated to R10 and I migrated my development environment to R10 and Visual Studio 2010. I followed the ESRI migration recommendations, recompiling and making the necessary changes. The routine tested fine on my machine (Windows 7) and on several other users' R10 Windows 7 machines. However, there is one machine, a Dell running Windows 7 and R10 on which it will not execute correctly. Upon execution the splash screen displays correctly then I get a message from the operating system telling me there was a problem and it's checking for a solution (course it can't find one). I've checked all the usual suspects: dotnet framework, target environment, etc. Anyone run into a problem like this or know of anything other than the suggested ESRI migration changes that could be causing the problem? The migration support is at http://blogs.esri.com/dev/blogs/arcgisdesktop/archive/2011/03/09/migration-resources.aspx
