Thank you Steve, my first impression was that ArcGIS Server recreated the cache from scratch switching from one format to the other. Now I know that it just put the existing tile png:s into bundles 🙂

Is it possible to create a compact cache from an exploded one actually using the tiles from the old cache? I have a scenario where I have an exploded cache with tiles I have altered slightly using an image manipulation program. Is it in any way possible to use those tiles when creating a compact cache instead of generating new tiles from the published service?

Hello, First off: I'm not sure whether to place this under Arcgis.com Online or the Javascript API, so I apologize if it's in the wrong forum. With that said, on to my questions: I am currently working on creating a customized wma based on the ArcGIS.com Map viewer (similar to the sample provided here. However, the reason that I need to create a custom WMA and cannot use a ready-made template from ArcGIS.com is that I want to include a Find Task-function (similar to the sample provided here. Now, in order create this function I need to know two things; first how do I find out the URL of my created map service (see first code-snip)? For instance, I created a quick web map to help me illustrate my point (http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=1c47e1217e394c39abca16756786b1f7). Is that URL also the URL of the map service (I haven't been able to make that one work)? Secondly, how do I find out the Layer-ID to use in the find parameters (see second code-snip)? Are layers on ArcGIS.com given IDs based on the order they were added?
//Create Find Task using the URL of the map service to search
findTask = new esri.tasks.FindTask("http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/TaxParcel/TaxParcelQuery/MapServer/");
//Create the find parameters
findParams = new esri.tasks.FindParameters();
findParams.returnGeometry = true;
findParams.layerIds = [0];
findParams.searchFields = ["OWNERNME1","OWNERNME2"];
findParams.outSpatialReference = map.spatialReference; Edit: I fixed the broken sample-link, my bad!

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to use the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer as a stand-in map service when you're working with the Javascript API to create WMAs? The reason that I am asking is that I want to create a (temporary) WMA which allows users to query and select features based on the features' area or other attributes. However, I will not have access to a proper version of ArcGIS Server for approximately 6-7 months (hence the "temporary"), so I can't host my own shape/feature files or create a proper map service. Would it be possible to create a map via ArcGIS.com's Map Viewer and use it as a map service to create a simple WMA (similar to http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/demos/find/find_nomap.html)? Or would it perhaps be better to use the templates provided and create a WMA, download it and then customize it to include query/find-capabilities? This was my first thought, but the setup with index.html and layout.js threw me off a little since I am quite new to javascript.

Out of curiosity, have you tried splitting your shape-file into a couple of smaller files? It's not optimal, but I noticed a pretty big increase in performance when going from one to four files.

Yes, it is possible... Check out the JavaScript API. Here's a link to the samples section. http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jssamples_start.htm Good luck, Mike Aha! Thank you oh so much, you've saved me a lot of headache.

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to extend the web mapping applications created with the Arcgis.com Map viewer with e.g. query widghets (such as http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapps/flexviewer/help/index.html#/Query_widget/01m30000000t000000/ or something similar written in javascript)? I am aware that it would be better, and probably easier, to just create a WMA from scratch using Flex/Javascript and link it to our GIS server, however my work will not have access to ArcGIS Server for about 6 months. The reason I'm asking is that I would like to add some query possibilities to an incredibly simple WMA; I want the users to be able to search and select polygons based on for instance area (or 2-3 other attributes).
