Yes, this will obscure password somewhat and it could be stored in a file encoded, but anyone who can look at the Python script will immediately know it is just base-64 and will be able to decode in one line: 'mysafepassword'.encode('base64') 'encodedpassword'.decode('base64') What I would like to know (and ESRI please feel free to chime in any time) is what the phrase 'The password is a geoprocessing-encrypted string' actually means? There are two passwords passed to this command (sysadmin and GDB admin) and documentation states that both are 'Encrypted String'. So there is got to be a way to pass an encrypted password, one would think?

One of the parameters to arcpy.CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase_management is the database administrator password. Documentation states that it is an "Encrypted String"; however in practice it takes a plain-text password: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//001700000162000000 gdb_admin_password (Optional) Provide the password for the geodatabase administrator user. If the geodatabase administrator user already exists in the DBMS, the password you type must match the existing password. If the geodatabase administrator user does not already exist, type a valid database password for the new user. The password must meet the password policy enforced by your DBMS. The password is a geoprocessing-encrypted string. Encrypted String I need to save this script on disk and use an encrypted password in it. What encryption algorithm/library is it expecting, and how does one generate such an encrypted password? Any ESRI tool available for this (it does say The password is a geoprocessing-encrypted string.)?

I have a feature-linked annotation class that labels points. I have set horizontal alignment to left-align in Symbol Properties of the annotation symbol (save inside a geodatabase via ArcCatalog annotation properties). Also, label position is set to Northeast (I use Maplex). When I place a new feature on the map, the annotation label for it is right-aligned for some reason. I can see the label properties (under annotation attributes) has Horizontal Alignment set to Right. If I change it, the label correctly aligns left. By that I mean the text inside the label alignment, not the position of the label. I see also that when placed, the Override read-only attribute of an annotation is set to 2052. Looking at online help, 2052 = 2048 + 4 - the bytes that control word spacing and horizontal alignment respectively - they get overridden. Question - what causes this override? I suspect this has to do with Maplex - but need to disable this.

AGS Server 10 SP2, using REST endpoint to query based on attribute value, such as: http://server/ArcGIS/rest/services/MyService/MapServer/1/query?text=&geometry=&geometryType=esriGeometryEnvelope&inSR=&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&relationParam=&objectIds=&where=STRUCTURENAME+LIKE+%27%25garage%25%27&time=&returnCountOnly=false&returnIdsOnly=false&returnGeometry=true&maxAllowableOffset=&outSR=4326&outFields=STRUCTURENAME&f=html Works great, returns 557 records. If I change the last parameter (format) to f=kmz, the KML returned contains all of the records in that layer (> 2000) - so WHERE clause doesn't seem to matter. A known bug?

As stated above, am getting Feature ID from Find task via REST endpoint: ABC.1
Feature ID: 703
Field Name: ANumber
Layer: ANumbersLayer
ANumber: ABC.1
Shape: Polyline When using FindTask in Silverlight API 2.2, get back everything but the Feature ID. e.FindResults.Feature returns a graphic correctly with all the attributes but the Feature ID (ObjectID). (I am not adding ObjectID to the SearchFields collection, as I don't want for Find to search it.) Any way to get Feature ID from the FindTask?

Jennifer, Yes, the graphics are indeed selected. I've filed a ticket - Esri Incident #951394. Thanks.

I have a polygon layer symbolized based on Selected state of Graphics. The XAML definition (straight from ESRI samples) is below.
<esri:SimpleRenderer x:Key="SelectFillSymbol">
<esri:SimpleRenderer.Symbol>
<esri:FillSymbol>
<esri:FillSymbol.ControlTemplate>
<ControlTemplate>
<Path x:Name="Element"
Stroke="Black"
StrokeStartLineCap="Round"
StrokeThickness="1.5"
StrokeLineJoin="Round"
StrokeEndLineCap="Round"
Fill="#00FFFFFF">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="SelectionStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Unselected" >
<Storyboard>
<ColorAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="Element"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Path.Fill).(SolidColorBrush.Color)"
To="#00FFFFFF" Duration="00:00:00.25"/>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Selected">
<Storyboard>
<ColorAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="Element"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Path.Fill).(SolidColorBrush.Color)"
To="#44AA00FF" Duration="00:00:00.25"/>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="Element" Storyboard.TargetProperty="StrokeDashArray">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
<DoubleCollection>2,1</DoubleCollection>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal" />
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
</Path>
</ControlTemplate>
</esri:FillSymbol.ControlTemplate>
</esri:FillSymbol>
</esri:SimpleRenderer.Symbol>
</esri:SimpleRenderer>
I load the indices of the Graphic objects that need to be selected, and select the appropriate graphics at the beginning, like so:
MyGraphicsLayer.Graphics.Where<Graphic>(sector => MySelectedList.Contains(int.Parse(sector.Attributes["SectorID"].ToString())))
.ToList<Graphic>().ForEach(g => { if (!g.Selected) g.Select(); });
This selects all Graphics in the layer, which SectorID attribute is in the MySelectedList List<int>. It was working fine in WPF 2.1 API, however, after upgrading to 2.2 API, the selected graphics on the map do not update their representation to selected (layer refresh does not help). Only when I start mousing over the polygons, those graphics that are selected start changing the look, and only when the mouse cursor passes over each individual polygon. I don't have any mouseover events on that layer or the map in general. ESRI - thank you for looking into this.

Many times users would like to use an attractive ESRI street map as a base map for their web app. It is, however, in WGS84. Applying ESRI template to your own data could be a painful experience, and adding ArcGIS Online street map to the MXD and caching on your local ArcGIS server is slow and distorts the original tiles, introducing noise. Wouldn't it be nice to have an uncached ARcGIS online street map service? It'll result in a much better-looking reprojected base map (albeit just as slow to cache) as when using the original tile imagery. With a deal from Amazon virtual host program, ESRI may be able to provide all this extra processing required for cheap, or it could be a premium service.
